160km overland trip to MalaysiaFeasibility of Prototype Talked to Mr Ng, a gardening centre owner

and sweet potato farmer

Confirmed feasibility of our plan

Told us good soil quality is not needed

160km overland trip to MalaysiaUnderstanding the conditions

Difficult to find land that is being

sold

Little wide open space

Plenty of small open areas

160km overland trip to MalaysiaDeploying the prototype

agricultural practices

Understand problems that farmers

face

30km boat trip to Batam

Understanding Kampung Teri Soil is only suitable for tropical fruit trees

for mangoes, banana, papayas, etc.

Too poor to buy the seeds for mango trees

Monkeys eat fruit from trees, especially

bananas

Solution

Sweet Potatoes is just a temporary solution

for the problem of poverty

Money earned from potato will fund the

purchase of fruit trees

Kampung Teri has 5 Ha of unused land

Best fruit tree is the mango tree

Finances:

Period to first harvest:

1 x 1 m (our method)

30km boat trip to Batam

Finances:

Annual Returns per 5 x 5 m plot:

Mango: 300kg x 3 harvest = 1200 kg

Sweet Potato: 4kg x 5 x 5 x 3 harvest = 300 kg

Annual Income:

Mango: 1200 x 4000 =

4800000 Rp

Sweet Potato: 300 x 1500 = 450000 Rp

Business Plan

The project is open to all Kampung Turi

residents

Can start the project anytime

Additional source of income

Can upgrade to higher value vegetable and

fruit

Can improve life standard in the future

30km boat trip to Batam

Ultimately, we would like to bring this

project to any undeveloped area and help

the less fortunate people get out of

poverty

Stack Up Those Potatoes

Why support our plan?

Low start up cost

Mr Ng will supply for free

Can use recycled pallets, tires or plastic

pipes

Small start to eradicating poverty

Extra income can be used to “upgrade”

to better fruit trees

Eventually, the higher value fruit trees

will bring them out of poverty

Stack Up Those Potatoes

Original, Creative and

Innovative?

New use for “unwanted” items

Using unused land to generate

income

Our plan is easy to modify, whether

in Malaysia and Batam

We’re not just providing plants, we

providing a business strategy!

Engaging our audience

Malaysia:

Taught and built 1 structure

2 to 3 other neighbors who are “copying”

Engaging our audience

Batam:

Working with Yayasan Citramas and

Kampung Teri

Village leader and several other villagers

are eager to get started

After this semester…

Batam:

Going back to Batam with materials and

sweet potato vines

Experiment with marcotting on mango

trees

If successful, will allow us to bypass the

need to buy mango trees

Our 3 week-old potato plant!
