Water Is Inspiring Many To Speak Up

Nearly five years ago, while working on an ethnographic film in Ethiopia, artist and activist Mary Jordan became acutely aware of the extreme challenges that the population, and women in particular, faced in accessing clean water.

After being nursed back to health from a water-born illness herself by women of a local village, Mary made a personal promise to raise awareness of the world’s water crisis and help inspire others to contribute to the cause.

Supporters & Alliances

The Water Tank Project will launch with big impact in the U.S. and build a movement of inspiration, awareness and change that will take it around the world. The map below illustrates cities across five continents that possess water tanks waiting to be transformed into beacons of environmental activism.

A Global “Ripple” Effect

NYC was built and remains dependent on clean water — more than 1.1 billion gallons each day.Much of that water sits directly above our heads in the city’s more than 17,000 iconic wooden water tanks.NYC will serve as the guiding beacon and megaphone to the world for the project.

The First Wave: New York City

Iconic fixtures of the urban landscape for more than a century. At 12 ft. high and 13 ft. in diameter, they are ideal canvases for a large-scale art installation and extraordinary art exhibition.Holding 10,000 gallons and made mostly of redwood, they serve as a vital water supply for household use, firefighting, and sprinkler systems in commercial and industrial buildings. The distinctive tanks can be seen from almost every corner of the city.
