What is OpenStack?

10

• OpenStack is an open source infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) cloud platform

• Jointly founded in July 2010 by Rackspace and NASA with merger of two

projects: Swift and Nova

• OpenStack is the single largest open source solution in history

• Surrounding this project is a massive ecosystem of vendors, many of whom

offer a distribution of OpenStack and added services to facilitate adoption

Fastest Growing Global Open Source Community

1. Enormous growth in all parts of the ecosystem –In February 2014, Forrester said “OpenStack would become a new de facto IaaS cloud standard by 2015”

2. More contributions directly from users

3. Collaborative support from users community

4. Use cases to build on

11

Who Manages OpenStack?

12

The OpenStack Foundation:

• Independent home for OpenStack with over 10M in funding

• Serves developers, users, and the entire OpenStack ecosystem

• Steers over 18000 individual Developers\Members and over 850

organizations contributing

• Platinum Members: AT&T, Ubuntu, HP, IBM, etc....

• Gold Members: NetApp, Yahoo, VMware, Dell, Intel, Hitachi, etc....

Basic Components of OpenStack

OpenStack Nova

Compute

• Provides the framework

for deploying and running

virtual instances

• Supports many different

hypervisors

OpenStack Networking

• Software-defined-

networking

• Pluggable design

providing VPNaaS,

LBaaS, VLAN

Isolation, etc.

OpenStack Storage

• Redundant, highly

object storage

• Persistent block level

storage

• Storage integration

with unified storage

platforms, NetApp,

Solidfire, etc.
