Geometry in the Real World

Point

• Exact position or location on a plane surface.

• The middle of the home plate is a point.

Line (Segment)

• A line with definite endpoints.

• In football, receivers try to stay in bounds- the boundaries are a line segment.

Plane

• An imaginary flat surface that is infinitely large and with zero thickness.

• The bowling alley is a flat surface.

Angle

• A shape formed by two lines or rays diverging from a common point (the vertex).

• The field goal makes 2 90 degree angles.

Perpendicular Lines

• A line is perpendicular to another if it meets or crosses it at right angles (90 degrees).

• The net makes perpendicular lines with the service boxes.

Parallel Lines

• Lines are parallel if they lie in the same plane and are the same distant apart over their entire length.

• Each yard line of a football field is parallel with the previous or next yard line.

Triangle

• A closed figure consisting of three line segments linked end to end, 3 sided polygon.

• A baseball diamond’s infield cut in half is a triangle.

Right Triangle

• A triangle where one of its interior angles is a right angle (90 degrees).

• The 10 area of the shuffle board cut in half is 2 right triangles.

Pentagon

• A polygon with 5 sides.

• Most soccer balls have pentagons on them.

Hexagon

• A polygon with 6 sides.

• MMA fighters fight in hexagon rings.

Square

• A 4-sided regular polygon with all sides equal and all internal angles 90 degrees.

• 1st base is a square.

Rectangle

• A 4-sided polygon where all interior angles are 90 degrees.

• A football field is a rectangle.

Trapezoid

• A quadrilateral which has at least one pair of parallel sides.

• In an Oklahoma drill 2 trapezoidal pads are used as boundaries.

Parallelogram

• A quadrilateral with both pairs of opposite sides parallel and equal in length.

• This guitar’s frets have parallelograms on them.

Circle

• A line forming a closed loop, every point on which is a fixed distance from a center point.

• In hockey arenas, center ice is a circle.

Cylinder

• A solid with circular ends and straight sides (like a pipe).

• The sweet spot of a baseball bat has the shape of a cylinder.

Sphere

• A 3-dimensional object shaped like a ball. Every point on the surface is the same distance from the center.

• A golf ball is a sphere.

Octagon

• A polygon with 8 sides.

• UFC fighters fight in octagon cages.

Oval

• An oval or ovoid is any curve that looks like an egg or an ellipse. It is not a precise term and there are many curves that get called "oval".

• A NASCAR track is an oval.

Isosceles Triangle

• A triangle which has 2 of its sides equal in length.

• A dartboard has many isosceles triangles.
