Tips for the free version of Screencast-o-matic

● The free version provides the services that we are going to walk you through

● The paid version, pro-recorder, you receive multiple editing features● There is no free trial for the paid version

● This can be used to help supplement material for a lesson.● I use this with students who may be ahead of pace, behind, in

additional assistance with a concept.

● Only allows 15 minutes of recording

Using Screencast - O - Matic

When you open SOM you will always need to click Use FREE Version unless you purchase the Pro version.

When it Opens

● If you have a previous recording you will need to click delete.

○ Remember if you have it in YouTube, it’s not deleted!

Resize What You Want to Record● You have re-sizing handles.● What is inside the dashed lines is what

will be recorded.● You can include your entire desktop or

just a portion.

● When you press record you will receive a countdown from 3 - 2 - 1 - Go! and then recording will start.

When Recording● You can pause and restart at any time.● Status bar shows time.● Pause button located to left of mic.

Starting and Stopping

● At any point you can listen to what you have captured.● You can replay from the beginning or a specific point in the video.● You can use the rewind/forward buttons to go to a different point within

your video.

Continuing● You can go to a specific point in the time bar and click record. You

will get the below screen.● It gives you 2 options. Continue and the end or start at the point you

have selected.

1. Don’t stress!2. So what if you make a mistake!3. Talk slow and pronunciate.4. Sit in a quiet place.

What Now!● Publish to YouTube

○ Automatically upload to YouTube. ■ Usually what I do!

● Publish to a Video File○ Allows you to save file to your computer or another

location.

● You can use YouTube to put videos that correspond with lessons in your classroom.

● You can do some small amounts of editing in YouTube but remember videos can only be 15 minutes long.

Getting Started● Create a new

assignment.● Click the Add YouTube
