VISION & MISSION STATEMENT
1. BACKGROUND: A MESSAGE FROM DR. NOEL BROWN, FORMER DIRECTOR
UNEP AND CURRENT PRESIDENT OF FRIENDS OF THE UN INTERNATIONAL.
“For the United Na/ons Conference on Sustainable Development, known as Rio+20,
the UN needs allies to help translate its complex programs into the language of the
people. The very important Millennium Development Goals will not be successful
unless the people of the world take part in implemen/ng them.
As the world confronts its most compelling environmental challenges ever, we need
to accelerate our efforts to heighten public awareness of the stakes involved, both
personally and universally, and to promote the gathering sense of urgency and inspi‐
ra/on for effec/ve ac/on.
Friends of the United Na/ons Interna/onal is commi0ed to engage in this mission.
This is the /me. Rio+20 is expected to guide the interna/onal development agenda
for the next decade and beyond. It will also mark 20 years since the ground‐breaking
“Earth Summit” in Rio where the world first met to chart the course for sustainable
development. Some have called Rio+20 the Conference for the Future. The UN
Secretary‐General recently called it one of the most important mee/ngs in the history
of the UN.
Right now humanity stands at the crossroads. As environmental change accelerates,
we, the interna/onal community, must accelerate our ac/ons! We must advance
faster on the path to sustainable development.
We can’t change the date of the Earth Summit, but we must change the mindset of
the people of the world to embrace a sustainable future, and we can do our utmost
to take advantage of this opportunity in Rio to mo/vate the people of the world to
take ac/on”.
2. THE REASON:We the people have poisoned our planet, and therefore ourselves.
Without our unintelligent ac0on from our ignorance in the past, the earth would be
fine. If we stopped destroying our environmental asset right now, the earth would
heal itself in 0me. We can’t stop immediately, but we can start to change our ways.
Now is the 0me for us, we the people, to engage with intelligent ac0on in the life‐
affirming task of saving our human race from devasta0on.
3. WHY ENGAGE? (1) our planet is in trouble; (2) our planet needs us to engage;
(3) we are the people we’ve been wai0ng for; (4) we can be the change; (5) the whole
world is so connected; (6) we the people of the planet are dependent on nature and
on the earth; (7) we need to wake up and engage to save our own lives; (8) people
feel disempowered and frustrated and unmo0vated; (9) they will engage if given
easy opportuni0es.
4. THE EVENT: Live in Rio in a venue to be decided, not a stadium with 50,000
people, but a more controlled situa0on of about 10,000 indoors.
5. THE DATE: World Environment Day, 5 June, 2012.
6. A REALITY SHOW: This is not just some lo"y idealis0c concept. It’s pragma0c and
will lead to posi0ve outcomes. Immediately it will pump emo0ve s0mulus into and
focus on the Rio+20 Conference. It will colour and flavour and humanise this fairly
staid conference.
7. CAN WE DO IT?... ‘YES WE CAN!” This slogan has been emblazoned on the minds
of people worldwide, not just in the USA. Here’s how we can use it...
YES WE CAN ... act intelligently!
YES WE CAN ... stop destroying our assets!
YES WE CAN ... save the forests!
YES WE CAN ... save endangered animals!
YES WE CAN ... have clean water!
YES WE CAN ... feed the children!
YES WE CAN ... make a difference!
YES WE CAN ... switch to clean renewable energy!
YES WE CAN ... change global warming!
YES WE CAN ... stop killing whales & dolphins!
YES WE CAN. .. be heroes!
YES WE CAN ... shape our future!
YES WE CAN ... achieve the Millennium Development Goals!
8. THE TV BROADCAST: Live around the world for 3 hours. First choice logically is
CNN. Second choice is UKTV plus the BBC in the UK. Replays possible on free‐to‐air
TV.
9. THE BROADBAND BROADCAST: Live on the Web from the Engage! site, if
agreeable with the interna0onal TV broadcaster. If not, immediately a"erwards and
con0nuing.
10. THE ENGAGE! SITE: A crea0ve and entertaining and inspiring Web Portal Site for
IPTV delivery, interac0vity & Social Community to be built ASAP to engage an
audience prior to the event, robust enough to handle lots of traffic at its peak, and
ongoing voluminous visits. Site wil be kept fresh and current into the future with
addi0onal content beyond the event. Interac0ve to allow the Social Community to
par0cipate and engage with each other. The IPTV content delivery aspect of the site
will be like a combina0on of Youtube plus Avaaz and Moveon.org. Links will lead
people from Engage! to many ac0ve sites involved in many issues and solu0ons for
environmental problems. The social community aspect wil allow people to come
together, discuss posi0ve ways forward and take ac0on.
11. POSSIBLE OPENING SEQUENCE: From space... astronauts introducing the show,
engaging us from the Interna0onal Space Sta0on. Music is David Bowie’s “Space
Oddity” (“Ground Control to Major Tom...”), visuals coming down from space to the
stage where David Bowie is singing with U2. This is actually the opening of U2’s
current 360 Degrees world concert tour.
12. THE THEMES: All songs to be in tune with the theme of engaging people to
respect our planet, to love nature, to help our planet earth heal for our own benefit.
Songs about our water, our earth, our air, our ecology, our creatures, our food, our
survival. Video snippets on these themes from stars and from recognised experts,
and inspired heroes for the environment.
13. THE PERFORMERS:We have many great performers we can approach, ar0sts who
care and who are already engaged in helping to be the change.
14. STAR APPEARANCES: This is our wish list of people who have shown they care
and who are already engaged in their own ini0a0ves to be the change. We will get
several of them in Rio or via video:

16. VIRAL MARKETING: As soon as the Engage! site is up we will connect with other
sites and Social Communi0es around the world to aggregate our audience in advance
of the event. Facebook, Youtube, Twi1er and Google par0cularly can bring a massive
audience very easily to the Engage! site. Also UN agencies. NGOs and online
communi0es such as Moveon.org and Avaaz will engage with us.
17. UBIQUITOUS DELIVERY: The Engage! site will be available on every digital screen
from mobiles through iPads to computers and television screens.
18. MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS: In the process of the concert we will
address the MDGs, but in an emo0onal and inspiring way to engage people to act,
not in the dry detail that the Rio+20 Conference will cover. Our mission is to make
the people of the world aware and to inspire them to engage into personal ac0on,
be it big or small.

environmentalists who want to par0cipate by presen0ng their focus on ecological &
humanitarian ac0on, but cannot come to Rio for the event.

Rio+20.
21. GLOBAL CAMPAIGN FOR CLIMATE ACTION (GCCA): Friends of the UN Australia is a
member of the Global Campaign for Climate Ac0on (GCCA) (h1p://gc‐ca.org). We are working
with them on Engage! and on a series of Youtube small concerts on the road to RIO+20. GCCA
runs the TckTckTck campaign which strengthens global civil society ac0on to prevent catastrophic
climate change, adapt to climate impacts and make the transi0on to a more sustainable and
just world. GCCA has 270 partners from a broad spectrum of civil society, including na0onal and
interna0onal NGOs working to protect the environment or to fight poverty. Some prominent
member organisa0ons of the GCCA include Amnesty Interna0onal, WWF, Bono’s ONE.org,
avaaz.org, Conserva0on Interna0onal, David Suzuki Founda0on.

24. THE ENGAGE! FOUNDATION: The profits will be allocated to The Engage!
Founda0on for the environment, dedicated to the human rights and clean ecology

rect ac0on projects, helping needy people worldwide. Micro fundings will be tracked
and documented on The Engage! Founda0on site within the Engage! “mother ship”
site, growing exponen0ally into a major collec0ve ac0on. People all around the world
will be able to see, be inspired by, and par0cipate in this worthwhile and sustainable
environmental and humanitarian ini0a0ve.

go to The Engage! Founda0on
