Pattern Languages in Architecture

DESIGN LIKE YOU GIVE A DAMN - PART TWO

Pattern Language?

Languages are made of words and sentences.

Words are pieces that can be arranged in different ways to make sentences

Patterns are repeated things built up over time

Pattern Language Architecture

“... we do believe, of course, that this language is something more than a manual, or a teacher ... the patterns here are archetypal - so deep, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seems likely they will be a part of human nature and human action as much in five hundred years as they are today ...”

Christopher Alexander, 1977

Think ...What did you design?

What are the “words” of your “language”?i.e. What are the “parts” of your room?

What turned out well?

Share ...Share your room with your group members.

What did you see that you thought other group members did well, or that you would like to use in your own designs?

Choose one design to share with the class.

Why did you choose this design? Each member should be able to explain the design to the class.
