Be the Panda: Learning about Technology in the Wild

Preview:

DESCRIPTION

Learning about the intersection of how people live with technology (or not) can be complicated. Sometimes the best way to do user research is to immerse ourselves, other times we need a little distance. Take a few moments to reflect on the position of a researcher and on pandas, cultural anthropology, data science, and Kung Fu.

Change Sciences

Research is connections We learn about people & technology in context

Researchers are a bit different We are curious in a good way

We often research in the wild That means we go where people are using technology

We do it for science Like the panda researchers, we want to keep it real

Sometimes we participate We borrow a little from anthropologists that way

Sometimes we keep a distance We try to observe what might really happen

At times we may role play Researchers have to get people thinking & interacting

We are hybrids Researchers are both insiders and outsiders

It is not black & white Understanding real life is messy

We follow a few guidelines That makes it easier on everyone

Take great care Respect the humanity of each individual

Get comfortable with silence It’s only awkward, if you feel awkward

Look below the surface Don’t take anything at face value

Use thick description Add context by describing the small details

Reveal more questions The proper conclusion is not to come to conclusions

There is no secret ingredient Approach research with an open heart & mind

Tap your inner panda Listen, observe, and occasionally offer treats

Prepare for a journey Research will transform everyone involved
