Legendary Football Players
There can be few more controversial signings in the history of football than when TottenhamHotspur signed him.
He was the son of a Bajan (Barbadian Creole) carpenter and a local Kent woman and was born in Folkstone in 1888.
He became the first outfield black player to play professional League football, making his debut for Tottenham in September 1909 at inside forward against Sunderland.

With his native club back in Cameroon, Canon Yaounde, he won five league championships before he traveled to Europe.
Twice named African Player of the Year in 1979 and 1982, he stayed on in Spain after the 1982 World Cup with Barcelona club Español.
He won the African Nations Cup in 1984. He was the first African goalkeeper to earn a contract in a professional club in Europe, and the first to keep a clean sheet in a World Cup match.

England has produced a long line of goalkeeping legends over the years. He was the best.
Born in Sheffield, he joined third division side Chesterfield as a part-time pro in 1955. After four years, he was ready for bigger tasks and joined Leicester City in 1959 for £7,000.
It was at Filbert Street he started to show his class. He and Leicester reached the final of the FA Cup in his second season, but lost to Spurs who completed The Double that year.

Born in Amsterdam 1947, he began his career at local club Ajax in 1964.
His excellent skills on the ball, great pace and ability to lift his team-mates to a higher level made him an invaluable asset to the Ajax-team.
He lifted Ajax to heights the club had never been at before. Six Dutch league championships, four domestic cup titles and then three straight European Cup triumphs 1971-73 plus a European Super Cup and World Club Cup title on top of that as well.

One of the best defenders in the game ever, he started his career in West Ham United and made his league debut for them as a 17 year-old.
He won his first England cap just weeks before the 1962 World Cup and gained a place in the squad that traveled to Chile.
He was a gentleman on and off the field and a true leader which made him win the England captaincy at an early age. He kept it for 90 of his 108 matches equaling Billy Wright’s record.

He was born in Milan and devoted his entire career to his beloved Internazionale.
This central defender or right-back blossomed early and broke into the first team already during the 1980/81 season as a 17 year-old.
He was soon acknowledged by national team coach Enzo Bearzot and was included in the 1982 World Cup squad having barely played 30 senior matches in the Italian league.

Born in Lierse, he is regarded as one of the best players in Europe of his generation. Having started with his local club, he moved to Club Bruges in 1978 where he stayed for 13 years until he retired.
In the meantime he won three league championships and was voted Belgian Player of the Year three times as well.
He made his debut for the national team in 1977 and three years later he was impressive when Belgium became runners-up to West Germany in the European Championship.

Born May 25th 1953, he was one of the most commanding sweepers/defenders in World Cup history. He was the perfect leader for any team, and became captain for both club and country at an early age.
Despite being only 174cm, he was exceptional in the air and scored an impressive amount of goals by headers from corners or free-kicks.
He was an unusual player. His scoring record is quite unique for a defender. In 298 matches in the Argentine league, he scored 99 goals.

His club career started out in Korea with the Air Force Club, and in 1972 he made his international debut at the age of 18, the youngest ever international for South Korea.
His debut came in the Asian Cup in Thailand, where he played five games as South Korea finished as runners-up.
His performances in Korea attracted the attention of European clubs and in 1978 he moved to West Germany to join SV Darmstadt 98.

Son of Brazilian international Domingos da Guia, Ademir da Guia was one of Brazil's most talented midfielders in the 1960s and 1970s.
Starting his career with Rio side Bangu, it was his move to Palmeiras in 1961 that led to one of the most successful playing careers with one club of any player in the world.
In a sixteen year spell with Palmeiras, Ademir da Guia played an astonishing club record 866 senior games and scored more than 150 goals.
