Football rulesField of Play. The game can be played on either natural or artificial surfaces, the surface must be green and rectangular in shape. The two long sides of the rectangle are called touch lines and the two shorter sides are called goal lines. The field is divided in half by the halfway line.Ball.Must be spherical, made of leather (or similar) 68-70 cm in circumference and of a certain pressure. Number of Players. Two teams of no more than 11 players (one of which is the goalkeeper). A game cannot start if either team has less than 7 players.Equipment.Players must wear a jersey, shorts, stockings, shin guards and footwear. Referee. The referee ensures the Laws of the Game are respected and upheld.Assistant Referees. There may be at most 2 assistant referees.Duration of the Match. The game is played in 2 halves consisting of 45 minutes each. The half time interval must not exceed more than 15 minutes. At the discretion of the referee more time is allowed to compensate for any stoppage during play e.g. Due to substitutions or care and attention of injured players.

Football rulesStart and Restart of Play.A kick-off starts play at the start of the match or after a goal. A kick-off involves one player kicking the ball, from stationary, forward from the centre spot. All players must be in their own half prior to kick-off. A coin is tossed pre-game, the team which loses the toss are awarded the kick-off to start the game whilst the team that win the toss are allowed to choose which direction they want to play. After half time the teams switch direction and the other team will kick-off. After a goal is scored, the team which conceded the goal will kick-off to restart play. Ball in and Out of Play. The ball is out of play once a goal has been scored or when the referee has stopped the game. The ball is in play at all other times.Method of Scoring. The ball crosses the goal line inside the goal mouth.Offside.It is an offence for a player to be in contact with the ball when they are closer to the opponents' goal than both the ball and the second-last opponent. The offside rule exists to ensure there are always opponents (generally the goal keeper and a defender) between a player receiving the ball and the goal. Without the offside rule, play can become boring with repeated long balls being kicked to a player stood next to the goalkeeper for an easy goal.Fouls/MisconductThese are many and varied, broadly speaking it is an offence to use excessive force whilst playing the game either deliberately or undeliberately or to handle the ball (unless you are a goal keeper). The referee may show the yellow card to caution players for less serious offences and the red card for more serious offences resulting in the player being sent off. Two yellow cards are equivalent to one red card.

Football rulesFree kicks.

Are given by the referee for fouls and misconduct. A free kick can either be direct or indirect. A goal can be scored directly from a direct free kick. A goal can only be scored from an indirect

free kick if it touches at least one other player first. The free kick must be taken from a stationary position with that position varying depending on whether the free kick was given

inside or outside the goal area and whether it's direct or indirect. The opposing team must be a minimum of 9.15 m from the ball when the free kick is taken.

Penalty Kicks. Are given against a team when they commit an offence which would normally be awarded a

direct free kick inside their goal area. The ball is kicked from stationary from the penalty spot. The opposing team must be outside of the penalty area and at least 9.15 m from the ball.

Throw-in.Used to restart play after the whole of the ball has crossed the touch line.

Goal kick.Used to restart play after a goal has been scored.

Corner Kick.Is given when the whole of the ball crosses the goal line and was last touched by a member of the defending team (and no goal was scored). A corner kick is taken from inside the corner arc closest to the point where the ball crosses the goal line. The defending team must be at least

9.15 m from the ball when the corner kick is taken. How many players are in a team

Football tacticsA football formation is a number set that describes the positions of players on the field. It determines how many players play on defence, the midfield, and the frontline. The first number always describes the defender, and so on. For example, a formation like 4-3-3 plays with four defenders, three midfielders, and three forwards. The goalkeeper is never mentioned in a soccer formation. Most formations are described in three numbers but four- and five-rank formations are also possible. The coach’s choice of formation is usually dictated by the type of players a team has. A coach may also change his team’s formations during a game to adapt with different situations (for example, when a goal is scored, a player is sent off by a red card, or a key player is injured). Below are the most dominant formations in football today:The most popular formation is 4-4-2 formation (4-4-1-1 / 4-1-2-1-2)

4-4-2 is the most basic of modern football formations. It is composed of four defenders (two centre-backs, two fullbacks), four midfielders (two central midfielders, two side midfielders), and two forwards.

In the 4-4-2 formation, one of the two forwards often plays outside the penalty box to bridge the midfield and frontline. This gives the team the appearance of playing a 4-4-1-1 formation.

The advantage of this formation is having an extra player that can help the striker attack without having to wait for midfield support. Another advantage of the 4-4-2 formation is width: the two side midfielders and two fullbacks allow a team to cover the space on the sides in defence and utilize it in offense.

Player: Official Cricket RulesCricket is a game played between two teams made up of eleven players each. There is also a reserve player called a "twelfth man" who is used should a player be injured during play. The twelfth man is not allowed to bowl, bat, wicket keep or captain the team. His sole duty is to act as a substitute fielder. The original player is free to return to the game as soon as they have recovered from their injury. To apply the law and make sure the cricket rules are upheld throughout the game there are two umpires in place during games. Umpires are responsible for making decisions and notifying the scorers of these decisions. Two umpires are in place on the playing field while there is also a third umpire off the field who is in charge of video decisions. This is where the call is too close for the on field umpires and they refer it to the third umpire who reviews slow motion video replays to make a decision.

Cricket batting skillsBatting gripThe grip principles are the same for right and left-handers. For a right-hander the left hand should be at the top of the handle - vice versa for a left-hander. Check both your hands are fairly close together on the bat, towards the top of the handle. Form a "V" by pointing your thumb and forefinger down between outside edge and centre of back of bat. The top hand rests comfortably on the inside of the front thigh (left thigh for a right hander). And the back of the top hand should face towards extra cover. Batting stanceThe stance is the "ready" position when the batsman is about to face a delivery. It is the base to play all your shots, so remember to be comfortable and relaxed. Points to remember: • The feet should be approximately a foot length apart either side or on the popping crease • The weight of the batsman should be on the balls of their feet, with the knees slightly bent. This means they can transfer quickly to either their front or back foot depending on the length of the ball • The batsman should be side on when the bowler is about to deliver • Some batsmen prefer to open their stance to help them see the ball clearer Batting backliftMost batsmen will raise their bat as the bowler approaches. taking the bat back and stepping to the ball sets the batsman up for playing the correct shot properly. The bat is taken back towards the stumps and at the top of the backlift the face should open towards second slip. The front shoulder should roll down as the bat is lifted, with the head kept as still as possible. Keep the hands close to the back hip, so that toe of the bat is at around shoulder height. Ensure any movement forward or back is completed before the downswing of the bat begins.

Cricket batting rulesShot selectionThe batsman's job is to score as many runs as possible. But to build an innings, a batsman needs sound judgement to work out which deliveries to defend, leave or score off. Even top class batsmen give their wicket away because of poor shot selection, so it's not an easy science. The batsman has approximately 12 shots to choose from either side of the wicket. So stroke selection depends on the line, length and speed of a delivery. There are three main lines: • Off stump and outside • Middle stump • Leg stump and outside And there are five main lengths of delivery: • Bouncer/long hop • Short of a length • Good length • Full length/half volley • Full toss For the best chance of building an innings, a batsman needs to move their feet backwards or forwards to get into the best position to play a stroke.

Cricket bowling skillsEvery bowler has a unique bowling action, a lot of which depends on their

body type and their bowling style. There two main types of bowlers - spin and seam and both can bowl left or

right-handed. Seamers are generally the faster bowlers with longer run-ups while spinners usually only have a few paces before they deliver the ball at a slow pace. Both types of bowlers will use different grips on the ball, more of which is

explained in the seam and spin bowling section. Finding the right action depends on how comfortable you feel when you bowl.

SIDE ONMost bowling actions are side on, which means the shoulders are square to

the batsman. FRONT ON

Rather than bowling side on, the bowler tends to have an open chest. MIXED ACTIONS

The chances of picking up injuries are greatly increased if a bowler has an action that puts too much pressure on their body.

Page 30: G.C.S.E P.E Cricket Football. Footballer or 2013/2014 season Players equipment Football tactics

Cricket bowling skills 2 Bowlers are the players in charge of collecting wickets for the fielding team.

Every bowler has their own individual method of bowling, so find the ideal bowling action for you.

There are five basic components to bowling. They are: • The run-up ,• Bound ,• Coil ,• Release ,• Follow through

The run-up • As you set off from the top of your run-up, start by using small steps before changing

to larger strides • Keep your arms close to your body and your head steady - keep your eyes fixed on

the target - the batsman The bound

• As you approach the crease, turn your body to get side on and lean back slightly Bowling action

• The coil is the spring from which the ball is released. Keep the ball close to your chin with your head looking behind a high front arm

• As your back foot lands on the pitch, keep your body upright. Your back leg should remain stable and support the body while the front foot should be raised slightly

• Your front foot should be pointing to the batsman as it lands with the leg braced ready to take the full impact of the delivery

Release • As the shoulders begin to rotate, push your bowling arm forward and down from the

coil position, with your non-bowling arm pointing to the batsman • The arms should rotate through with the ball released at the top of the delivery arc

Bowling action • As you follow through, fold your bowling arm into your body and swing your hips

around to finish • Your momentum will take you towards the batsman but make sure you don't run

down the middle of the pitch
