Let’s Look at Rulers

Sunday April 13, 2014 Morning Worship

Matthew 7:1-51 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.

Matthew 7:1-53 And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?

Matthew 7:1-54 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye?

Matthew 7:1-55 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Let’s Look at Rulers Don’t measure like the Pharisees!

Matthew 7:1,21 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.

Judgment of the Pharisees• Their expectations of people• Self-righteous arrogance• Overly critical• “nit picking”• Digging and searching for

faults

Matthew 5:20For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

1Samuel 16:7But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

1Corinthians 4:3-53 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself.

1Corinthians 4:3-54 For I know of nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord.

1Corinthians 4:3-55 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God.

Let’s Look at Rulers Don’t measure like the Pharisees! Don’t measure while blinded!

Matthew 7:3-53 And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?

Matthew 7:3-54 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye?

Matthew 7:3-55 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Judging Around the Plank• Hypocritical• Don’t acknowledge their own sin• No concern for the one with the

speck

“I am firm. You are obstinate. He’s pigheaded.

I have reconsidered. You have changed your mind. He’s gone back on his word” ~ Bertrand Russell

Let’s Look at Rulers Don’t measure like the Pharisees! Don’t measure while blinded! Be careful which ruler you use –

you just might see it again!

Matthew 7:1,21 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.

Spiritual Rulers Some Use• Perfection in theology• Perfection in behavior• “Stone them” mentality

Let’s Look at Rulers Don’t measure like the Pharisees! Don’t measure while blinded! Be careful which ruler you use –

you just might see it again!
