Poor Training

• Due to worker turnover, one in every four workers undergoes some type of new employee training each year.

• It’s easy to overlook critical details during the onboarding process.

• Are your workers getting quality training that’s specific to the jobs they’ll be doing?

Lack of InformationYour workers can’t be expected to have all the answers, but they should know where to find them:

• Safety data sheets• JSAs • Policies and procedures

*Keep these important documents in a digital format workers can easily access.

ComplacencyNo one goes to work expecting to get hurt.

But it’s exactly that mentality—”it won’t happen to me”—that causes most accidents and injuries.

Remind your employees no job is routine.

Frustration• There are all kinds of reasons why workers get frustrated

on the job, and many of them are things you can’t control.

• But there are a few things you can do to improve morale. • Make sure employees have what they need to do their jobs

properly.

Fatigue• A worker who is sleep-deprived can be just as hazardous as

a worker under the influence of drugs or alcohol.• Employees also need to be trained to recognize the

symptoms of fatigue and know when they’re not just tired, but actually putting themselves at risk.

Laziness• When worker safety is on the line, shortcuts are

unacceptable.  • Enforce good housekeeping and use of personal protective

equipment. • Make sure workers follow proper procedures at all times as

outlined in their job safety analyses.

Outdated Safety Records• Are your training records current? • How about the safety data sheets? If you’re relying on

someone to manually update them each time there’s a change, you could be opening yourself up to errors, not to mention inefficiencies.

Disorganized Policies and Procedures• Do you have a step-by-step process outlined for safely

locking out or tagging out equipment to prevent the release of hazardous energy?

• What about your other safety procedures? If your employees don’t have consistent guidelines to follow, it’s more difficult for them to act responsibly.

Poor Communication• Paper-based processes and inconsistent

communication procedures can create a disconnect between departments.

• If your workers aren't quickly adapting to new policies —or if you're seeing policies that aren’t uniformly enforced—you may need to implement more consistent systems for relaying information across your workplace.

Fear• If your workers are in constant

fear of something—whether it’s missing regulatory deadlines, being injured or getting slapped with an OSHA violation—they won’t be working safely or efficiently.

• It’s true that fear can be a powerful motivator in some cases, but when it comes to safety, it’s counterproductive.

A good safety management

program should address all these

hidden gaps, from training workers to tracking incidents.
