Location

*Each student needs a Nystrom Desk Atlas

Has your mom ever called or texted you, asking where you were?

Did you tell her your relative or absolute location?

What’s relative and absolute location, and what’s the difference?

Relative Location:

Using another place to describe that location.

ExampleIf you text your mom back and said: “OMG mom, I’m with my BFF at the Starbucks next to the Greenbelt Theater 3”.

Relative Location

ExampleIf you text your mom back and said: “OMG mom, I’m with my BFF at the mall, on the corner of Washington and Main street”.

Relative Location

Absolute Location:Your exact location. This can include an address or GPS coordinates (Longitude and Latitude).

ExampleIf you text your mom back and said: “OMG mom, I’m with my BFF at Starbucks, at 2300 East Makati avenue in Manila, Philippines”.

Absolute Location

Turn to page 8 in your atlas

Latitude

The lines around the earth that go East to West.

Find it on your map:-The Equator.

LongitudeThe lines that go North and South on the earth.

Find on your map:-Prime Meridian (0)–International Date Line. (180)

Each latitude line is given a number.

The equator is ‘0’.All latitude lines above or north

of the equator are 1degree north to 90 degrees North (at the North pole).

All latitude lines below or south of the equator are 1degree south to 90 degrees south(at the south pole).

Latitude LinesUse the left and right side of your map to find the latitude:

30 degrees N60 degrees S23 1/2 degrees N

Each longitude line is given a number too.

The prime meridian is ‘0’ (which runs through France and Africa).

All longitude lines going East from the prime meridian go from 1 degree east to 180 degrees.

All longitude lines going West from the prime meridian go from 1 degree west to 180 degrees.

180 degrees is the International Date Line. It runs off the coast of New Zealand up to the eastern most part of Russia.

Longitude Lines

Use the top and the bottom of your map to find the longitude:

90 degrees W120 degrees E75 degrees E

Both Together = Coordinates
