In the digital future, what does it mean to be human?

To me this is a bit more 'humans and data bias". Google didn't have enough black people in their training data, and because like no one at Google is black, this may have not come up. Lack of diversity/oversight in (a) selecting test data and (b) ensuring inclusion, are both functions of real-world bias that find their way into algorithms. These algorithms go full circle and eventually replicate the inherent system bias of the system that created it. No black people make a digital product->system learns to be racist->black people's lives are impacted by that digital prodcut

I would consider including the point that the most vulnerable communities often have the least protection from overbearing surveillance systems. Digital rights are human rights, and groups refugees deserve protection from invasive (biometric, etc) systems as anyone else.

Maybe mention that the companies are also capturing talent in the labor market away from public research to corporate (proprietary) research."In 2015, car-hailing app Uber, which was collaborating with the [US National Robotics Engineering Center], hired almost 40 of [its] 150 researchers. http://www.nature.com/news/ai-talent-grab-sparks-excitement-and-concern-1.19821

The walls are only getting higher

Who does your device think you are?

Where are we now? We’re entering a new era of technological

developmentTechno-solutionism is the leading ideology of

Silicon ValleyThe speed of development has outpaced the

speed of governance and regulationIt’s time to take a step back

Matthew Stender
"step back"I hear what your saying, but as I mentioned in my presentation, I dont know if we can a) ask people to stop using tech b) slow down the progress by tech companies (and therefore the artificial demand that comes with it).Perhaps "it's time to reclaim our bodies from the machine"

It’s time to ask:Who is developing these new technologies? What motivates them? What biases do they have? How do these biases play into the

development of new tech?

So...what are our principles, then?

How do we work toward a new ethical framework?

Governance must be human-centered; “We cannot outsource our moral responsibilities to machines” - Zeynep Tufekci

Human rights are fundamental

Inclusion should be paramount

Transparency is a key piece of the puzzle(and comprehension is important too!)

danke schön!thank you!
