In the arena of human interaction there is an unwritten rule that suggests that a person should treat others as they hope

to be treated by them in return.

This rule is commonly referred to as the Golden Rule. In western culture, and

particularly in Christian culture we are reminded of this by the simple words,

“Do unto others…”

The concept of the Golden Rule or the law of reciprocity can be traced back to ancient cultures in China

and Egypt. The term “Golden Rule” was originally coined in England in the 1600’s but the

concept can be found in nearly every culture dating back long

before that time.

The Golden Rule is one of the most valuable ways to engage in human relationships. Regardless of your

religious affiliation or social background, it is important to teach

your children what it means and how to put it into practice.

The Golden Rule is more a philosophical proposal than it is a religious proposal,

which is why it has been so naturally adopted by so many cultures and

religions from Christian and Buddhist to Islamic and Judaic. Following its simple guidelines makes life better for everyone.

The Golden Rule teaches empathy and equality for all humans. It can be

applied from one individual to another, between a group and an individual or between two groups. It is among the

best tools for resolving conflict.

By teaching and modeling the Golden Rule, you are providing your children

with an effective tool that will prove to be invaluable to them for the rest of their

lives.

Fundamentally, it proposes that one expect nothing more from another than

what they would be willing to grant themselves. It is a proposal of supreme balance without preferential treatment.

Because younger people are generally interested in ideas of fairness and balance, they will likely take to the

concept of the Golden Rule quickly.

One of the great benefits of living by the Golden Rule is that you can feel when you are in balance with it. By simply tuning into your Internal Guidance

System, (IGS) you will always be able to sense what the right course of action is,

and you will know when the laws of reciprocity are in balance, based on how

things feel.

Children often have a tendency to follow whatever it is that their peer group is

into. If their group is out of balance with the Golden Rule, they may stray in that direction, too. You can teach them to

check in with their IGS and consider the Golden Rule to ensure that they are acting with integrity and balance.

Ultimately, following the Golden Rule will teach them to be in harmony with

their highest selves and this will resonate positively through their peer

group and community.

Living by the laws of reciprocity, treating others as you would like to be treated,

and modeling the Golden Rule for your children is one of the greatest gifts that

you can offer them.

By teaching your children to tune into their IGS and live in balance with the Golden Rule you are providing them

with tools for life-long success through positive communication, respect for self and others, and an ability to empathize,

cooperate, and compromise for the greatest good of all parties.

These skills will contribute to deeper balance and well being. They will have authentic relationships with friends, teachers, coaches, business partners, romantic partners, and the myriad of

others that your children will relate with throughout their lives.
