Why is PDHPE important in our

schools?Because it is essential to

children’s growth and learning

Health Issues• Todays children are experiencing

more dental decay, obesity and diabetes than ever before. (AIHW 2010)

• PDHPE within schools can increase overall health whilst also reducing rates of dental decay, obesity, diabetes, asthma and the survival rates of some cancers.

So why don’t we do more PDHPE?

• Often teachers believe that PDHPE isn’t as important as other KLA’s.

• Only 6-10% of the 2 hours allocated to PDHPE each week is actually undertaken. (Curry 2012)

• However, PDHPE is one of the most important KLA’s a teacher will teach.

Its more than just sport!• PDHPE is about more than just

sport. It allows children to understand a variety of important aspects such as:

• Growth and development• Safe living• Healthy living and choices• Interpersonal relationships• Games and sports

PDHPE is positive in all lives

• PDHPE gives individuals the tools they need in life.

• Develop a positive attitude to physical activity.

• Teach children how to put these skills into action in their lives.
