2. Head Arms Legs Hands Feet Chest Introduction Welcome to the
skeletal system!Come along with me as we learn a little bit about
human bones, and the names given to them.Click on introduction to
learn about bone structure, then click on each part of the body to
learn the names of bones in that given area.Need to see if you have
learned all the names?Try quizzing yourself! Bone Quiz Authors page

- Bones provide support, protection to vital organs and allow for
movement in the human body. All the bones of the body together is
called the skeletal system. The skeletal system is what gives the
human body its distinctive shape!Did you know that an adult has 206
bones? An infant has even more. They have more than 300 bones! As
babies grow some bones join, or fuse, together to make a bigger
stronger bone.Osteologyis the study of bones.

Quit 4. Introduction cont.
- Because bones make up such a large portion of the human body
they are made to be lightweight, but very hard and strong. There are
three different parts that make up each individual bone:periosteum
, compact boneandspongy bone .The periosteum in the thin outer
layer of the bone. The difference between spongy and compact bone
is the amount of gaps and spaces in them.Compact bone has very few
gaps and is made in a honeycomb like fashion, making it a harder,
denser, stronger material. This is what the outside of a bone is
made of with the periosteum surrounding it on the outside. The
inside of the bone is softer having more gaps throughout it.This is
where bone marrow is found.Bone marrow creates red and white blood
cells that get sent throughout the body in the circulatory system
(which is to be talked about at a different time).Although bones
are very strong, they do occasionally break, and need some time to
heal.Come with me as we look at each section of the human body, and
we will give names to some of the bones found in each area.
Quit 5. Head (skull)
- The skull consists of 28 bones (22 not counting the 6 ear
bones). All of the bones are joined by sutures causing them to be
rigid allowing for very little movement, except for the mandible. At
birth humans have 45 bones in the skull and many fuse together. We
will only be learning 4 of these bones for starters.
Maxilla Mandible Frontal lobe Nasal bone Quit 6. Chest
- The chest area consist of the shoulder girdle and the spine and
ribs. The spine is made of 26 vertebrae. There are 24 ribs.Did you
know that the clavicle is the most frequently fractured bone in the
human body?
Rear viewClavicle Scapula Vertebrae Sternum Ribs Quit 7. Arm
Humerus RadiusUlnaQuit Your humerus bone connects to the scapula of
the shoulder girdle and is above your elbow. The ulna and radius
are below you elbow.A way that I remember which bone is which is
that the ulna is the shorter word, and it connects to the short
pinkie.Radius is a longer word which connects to the longer thumb.
The elbow is the end of the ulna and radius 8. Hand Carpals
Metacarpals Phalanges Ulna RadiusQuit The hand consists of 27
bones. 8 wrist bones called carpals, 5 hand bones called
metacarpals, and 14 finger bones called phalanges. 9. Leg Pelvis
FemurPatella Tibia Fibula Quit The lower portion of the body
consists of the pelvis and leg and feet bones. The femur is the
biggest bone in the human body. The patella is the kneecap. To
remember which bone is the tibia and fibula I say that the fibula
fibs, or fools, you into thinking its the bigger bone by having the
longer name, but it is not it is the smaller if the two. 10. Feet
Metatarsals Tarsal Calcaneus Phalanges Quit Your feet take a great
amount of pressure from supporting up your entire body. There are 26
bones in each foot. Just like in the hands the feet have 6, not 8
like the hand, ankle bones called the tarsal, 5 foot bones called
metatarsals, and 14 toe bones once again called phalanges. The
calcaneus is your heel bone. 11. Bone Quiz
- Welcome to the bone quiz!
- Take a piece of paper and number it 1-24.
- Each bone of the body now has a number instead of the
name.Write down the name you think the bone is called next to the
number given. After you write down all you know feel free to check
your answers by clicking on the answer sheet link on the last slide
of the quiz.Good Luck!
- Go to the last slide of the quiz or back to this page to return
to the main page of the presentation.
