DEFINITIONS

Body Image: Concept of one's physical appearance based on self-observation & reactions of others.

Body Fat Ratio: Amount of body fat in relation to total body weight.

Overweight: weighing 10% or more of what is considered his or her recommended healthy weight

Obesity: Increased body weight caused by excessive accumulation of fat. Putting oneself at greater risk for illness and disease.

WEIGHT RELATED HEALTH RISKS

Cardiovascular Diseases: Cholesterol = Artery build up, plaque = Heart Attack, Stroke

Type 2 Diabetes: Body’s breakdown of sugar. Insulin; hormone that regulates the absorption of sugar into your cells.

-The more fatty tissue you have, the more resistant your cells become to insulin.

WEIGHT RELATED HEALTH RISKS

Cancer: 20% of cancer’s associated with obesity. High Blood Pressure: fatty tissues & cholesterol Osteoarthritis: Joint disease, For every 2-pound

increase in weight, the risk of developing arthritis is increased by 9 to 13%.

EATING DISORDER STATISTICS

5-10%(5-10 million) girls/women 1 million boys/men 10% of college females, clinical or sub-clinical 15% of young women have distorted eating

behaviors/attitudes

Each day Americans spend an average of $109 million on dieting and diet related products.

80 % of American women claim to be dissatisfied with their appearance and shape

1 in 2 American women are on a weight loss diet. Children, 8-10 yrs old. 50 % of girls said they

were unhappy with their size. Media’s idea that "thin is beautiful” is the leading

ANOREXIA NERVOSA

Greek meaning "lack of appetite” Eating disorder determined by low body weight and body

image distortion. Obsessive fear of gaining weight. Anorexia includes starving oneself, excessive exercise, &

excessive use of diet pills or laxatives. 10% males 10-15% become fatal

ANOREXIA SIGNS/SYMPTOMS

Thin but believe they need to lose weight. Continues to restrict foods despite not being

overweight. Food Label Obsession

May limit eating to certain kinds of food. Cereal, bagels, plain salads, and vegetables are

frequently foods of choice. May wear layers of clothes to hide his/her body.

BULIMIA NERVOSA

A person with bulimia eats a lot of food in a short amount of time(binging.)

Fear of gaining weight after a binge. Binging causes feelings of shame and guilt. Person tries to "undo" the binge by getting rid of

the food. This is called purging.

BULIMIA SIGNS/SYMPTOMS

Going to the bathroom shortly after eating a large amount of food.

Taking Laxatives to lead to a bowel movement.

Obsessing about exercise after a period of eating.

Taking water pills to urinate

BINGE EATING

Uncontrolled, impulsive, or continuous eating beyond the point of feeling comfortably or full.

No purging, but there may be sporadic fasts or repetitive diets.

Feelings of shame or self-hatred after a binge.

BINGE EATING

People who overeat compulsively may struggle with anxiety, depression, and loneliness.

Body weight may vary. Not everyone who is overweight or even obese is

a binge eater.

BINGE SIGNS/SYMPTOMS

Eating is out of control. Eating large amounts of foods in one sitting, to

the point of discomfort. Secretive eating. Being embarrassed by the amount of food they

eat.

EATING DISORDERS’ HEALTH CONSEQUENCES

Tooth decay because of repeated exposure to acidic gastric contents. B
