Smoke-Free Environments: Smart Policy
Secondhand smoke is deadly causing premature death and disease to children and adults who do not smoke. There is NO safe level of exposure.
Only 100% smoke-free indoor space policies fully protect nonsmokers from exposure to secondhand smoke.
Smoke-free policy implement saves money.
Breathe Easy Coalition
The Breathe Easy Coalition of Maine works to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke through the promotion of strong voluntary policies that lead to reduced tobacco use and tobacco-free living throughout Maine. BEC is an umbrella coalition of the: Smoke-Free Housing Coalition of Maine Maine Tobacco-Free College Network Maine Tobacco-Free Hospital Network
Breathe Easy Coalition
Smoke-Free Housing Coalition of Maine, 2003 Private, public and quasi-public multi-unit housing. Encourages voluntary 100% policy change by property managers and municipal/state-level efforts that encourage policy change. Tenant empowerment and education.
Maine Tobacco-Free College Network, 2009 Educate and encourage all post-secondary schools in Maine to implement 100% campus-wide policy.
Maine Tobacco-Free Hospital Network, 2009 Educate and encourage all hospitals and clinic sites to implement 100% campus-wide policy.

MTFCN Achievements
Developed and released policy support kit and fact sheet
Implemented inaugural Gold Star Standards of Excellence recognition program - 8 colleges/universities participated
Provided technical assistance to 13 Maine institutions of higher learning
MTFHN Acheivements
Developed and released tobacco-free hospital fact sheet (include image)
Implemented Gold Star Standards of Excellence recognition program - more than 70% of Maine hospitals participated
Provided tecnical assistance to 11 Maine hospitals on policy development and implementation
SFH Coalition Acheivements
100% of Maine Public Housing Authorities have implemented smoke-free policies
Percentage of Maine private mulit-unit housing that is smoke-free increased to 48%
Maine implemented secondhand smoke policy landlord disclosure law
Percentage of MaineHousingSearch.org listings that are in 100% smoke-free buuldings continued to increase - surpassed 20%

BEC Overall Initiatives
Continue to increase awareness of the harmful effects of secondhand and thirdhand smoke exposure
Continue to increase branding and awareness of BEC througha variety of methods, including new website
Increase capacity for smoke-free/tobacco-free policy work through webinars, newsletters and resources
Smoke-Free Housing
Increase the percentage of subsidized housing that is smoke-free
Support MSHA to make smoke-free policies a threshold requirement for QAP funding
Increase awareness and compliance around Maine's secondhand smoke policy landlord disclosure law
Educate, by distributing new resources, landlords and tenants about reduced fire dangers associated with adopting smoke-free policies
Tobacco-Free Hospitals
Implement and increase participation levels for strengthened Gold Star Standards of Excellence program
Continue to build partnershipwith Maine Hospital Association to increase awareness and support of tobacco-free hospitals
Provide support to health care settings around tobacco-free policies
Tobacco-Free Colleges
Implement and increase participation levels for Gold Star Standards of Excellence program
Build partnerships to support tobacco-free colleges/universities creation with Maine College Health Association, Maine Community College System and/or other higher education organizations in Maine
