Group writing • I will give each student a topic (cause or effect). • On a clean piece of paper, please write a thesis sentence for

an essay about that topic. • Then write one supporting idea for the essay. (should be a

topic sentence)• Now pass the paper to a student in your group. Each student

will receive a new topic and must add the second supporting idea.

• Continue until the whole essay is outlined.

Example: • Topic: Why are there so many demonstrations in Korea these days?

Student 1: The number of demonstrations on the streets of Seoul seems to be increasing. There are several reasons for this. First, the sinking of the Sewol is one of Korea’s biggest disasters and the public is demanding action in response.

Student 2: Another reason is that the weather is getting better and in warmer months, demonstrations usually increase in number.

Student 3: Another reason is that elections will be held soon. This usually increases political rallies.
