Ram appeared in three tests of 20, 50 and 30 marks respectively. He obtained 75% marks in the first and 60%

marks in the second test. What should be his percentage of marks in the third test in order that his aggregate is 60%?

• The marks obtained are : • Aggregate: (20+30+50) *60/100 = 60 • 20 *75/100 = 15• 50*60/100 = 30• Thus he must have got (60 – (30 +15) ) = 15

marks in the last paper. 15/30 *100 = 50%. Thus he must have got 50% marks in the 3rd paper.

The Gross national product (GNP) of a country was Rs. 20,000 crores before 5 years. If it is Rs. 30,000

crores now, find the annual rate of growth of GNP.

• It has grown 10000 in 5 years, thus on an average it is growing by 2000. thus growth rate is 10% per annum.

• Using compound interest formula: 20000*(1+r)^5 = 30000 or (1+r)^5 = 1.5 the rate is .084 or 8.4% answer.

Typist A can type a letter in five minutes, B in ten minutes and C in fifteen minutes. What is the average number of letters-typed per hour

per typist?

• Typist A types 12 letters per hour, B types 6 letters per hour, and C types 4 letters per hour. Add them = 22

• Dividing it by 3 gives us 7.3 as the average number of letters being typed by the these typists. Answer.

What is ogive?

• It is a cumulative frequency graph.

• It shows the values as sum total in less than or more than format.

Convert the following into an ogive..

We make 5 observations, the values of mean, variances are 4.4 and 8.24. the first 3 observations

are 1,2,6, what are the other two?• Total of 5 values : 4.4 *5 = 22.• The last two total up to 22 – (1+2+6) = 13• Variance is 8.24, thus total variance is : 8.24 * 5 = 41.2 • Let us add the variances of the first 3. • (1 -4.4)^ = 11.56, 2nd = (2-4.4)^2 = 5.76, 3rd = (6-4.4)^2 =

5.76. add them = 23.08. thus remaining variance is 18.12. let us assume the numbers to be X and Y.

• X + Y = 13. (X – 4.4)^2 + (Y – 4.4)^2 = 18.12

Solution • X + (13-x) = 13. (X – 4.4)^2 + (Y – 4.4)^2 = 18.12• X ^2 -8.8 X +19.36 + (13-x) ^2 -8.8(13-x) +19.36 =

18.12• X ^2 -8.8X +169 -26X +X^2 -114.4 +8.8X = 18.12 -

38.72• 2X^2 -26X +169-114.4 +20.6 = 0• Divide by 2• X ^2 – 13X + 36=0• X^2 – 9X – 4 X + 36 = 0• Thus the factors = 9 and 4. answer.
