Use the Preterit for:- Completed actions- Completed actions with in a specific time- Summary or reaction statement

Use the Imperfect for:- progression of action with no focus on time- Habitual actions- Descriptions of physical or emotional states or past desires and opinions- Background information

In a story the preterit is like the backbone of the story. It is the verbs that move the story forward.
