Weaving is the primary form of arts and crafts in Panay island.

It is in Panay where weaving from indigenous textiles such as jusi and pinya became popular.

In Iloilo, weaving patadyong is an important industry.

Patadyong is a wrap-around piece of cloth worn by women.

This type of clothing is often colorful and features linear and geometric designs.

Patadyong and hablon

are still practiced in

Miag-ao, Iloilo.

In Aklan, weaving baskets, trays, and mats is popular.

Aklanon uses pandan and bariw - a type of pandan.

Pinya weaving is also a lucrative

industry in Bacolod where materials

are imported from Aklan.

In Valencia, Negros

Oriental,sinamay weaving is a world-class industry.

Sinamay is made from abaca twine and indigenous plan similar to banana.

Samar is known for its beautiful and colorful hand woven banig that are made from tikog leaves.

Aside from mats,

the Warays and

Cebuanos make baskets, bags

and other

containers that

are both useful

and functional in the daily lives of

the community.

In Davao, women weave abaca fibers to make a

design.

The weavers, in time, learned the tie-dyeing technique

called ikat when the designs are woven into fabrics.

make your own simple weaving design.

for a fan

or for a placemat or any product you can invent.

You will use colored pages from magazines and colored paper

to make your SIMPLE WEAVING.

Can you make up your own SIMPLE WEAVING design by just looking at these examples?

A quick recall:

In PAPER WEAVING strips of paper are passed over and under each other to form a design.

Threads that go up and down in vertical orientation are called the WARP.

Threads that go across are the WEFT.

Weft is woven over and under the warp.

The challenge is for you to use varying lines, cuts, colors and number of strips.

Remember the more original your designs are – the more interesting and creative they will be!
