Bamboo & Cane Development Institute (BCDI)

Bamboo & Cane Development Institute (BCDI) was set up in 1974 at Agartala by Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India with an objective to provide strong forward and backward linkages for the producers of Cane and Bamboo of North East Region.

A new building has been set up to activate the working of BCDI in a sprawling area of six acres of land at a very prime location in Agartala. National Centre for Design & Product Development (NCDPD) has been entrusted with the responsibility of running and management of BCDI by O/o. Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) with an objective to professionalize the efforts in an effective manner.

Kerala State Bamboo Mission (KSBM)

Kerala State Bamboo Mission (KSBM) was constituted under Department of Industries & Commerce and functioning at Kerala Bureau of Industrial Promotion with the broad aim of marshaling the scattered resources of the State and adopting a focused approach to revitalize the bamboo sector by promoting value addition, enhancing income generation and alleviating poverty through the following interventions- Creation of new design for innovative products in Bamboo sector- Assess gaps in skill of artisans on location basis- Prepare training module based on the need-assessment- Quality enhancement and Product improvement on existing products through Engineering inputs- Promotion of bamboo-based entrepreneurship by providing necessary support services- Provide necessary support to create market demands- Act as a support service provider to bridge the critical gaps in the sector- Promotion of bamboo propagation- Maintaining an information System about Bamboo.

In this improved tool kit hand operated power tools like drill machine and angle grinder has been included for speedy, quality and uniform production. This is a comprehensive tool kit and compatible to carry out turning craft, Utility product, Cutting pasting work, furniture making, basketry and jewellery making etc.

DEMONSTRATION of Power Tools

Hand operated power tools can reduce the production time as well as increases the quality of product. Detail about various power tools, its uses and operation was demonstrated to the participants. Maintenance and trouble shooting was also discussed with the participants.

BAMBOO SETUM

Introduction and Identification of various bamboo species was demonstrated at the Bambusetum of BCDI. About 13 different bamboo species and its utilization were discussed with the participants.

TREATMENT & SEASONING

Treatment and preservation of bamboo is the most important factor for product development activity. A detailed demonstration and hands on experience was given to the participants. Different preservative and its concentration were discussed. Various treatment process like dipping, Boucherie and Vacuum Pressure Impregnation was demonstrated. This was their first time experience for treatment and seasoning.

PRIMARY PROCESSING

Use of machines for bamboo processing is the present need. Various primary processes like cross cut, splitting, knot removing, and four side planning were demonstrated. A complete hands on practical session for firsthand experience was given to the participants.

This is the first time when participants have seen such processing machines and they all were excited during operations.

SECONDARY PROCESSING

Bamboo glue board is made from bamboo slats with high temperature and high pressure (Hot Press machine) using resin for bonding. There are three types based on the arrangement of bamboo Slats: Horizontal, Vertical and Combined.Participants made the vertical bamboo glue board during the training.

FINISHING

Finishing is the final stage of product development process and various finishing techniques were shown to the participants. Chemical and Natural finishes were demonstrated. Oil finishing to the cutlery or any other edible proposes product was also shown.

SHILPAGURU

Experience sharing & Guidance

Shilpa Guru is the highest Award of Honour for a Master. Shri S. B. Roy, Shilpa Guru was one of the Master trainer for the training program. He shared his experiences, learning with the participants and guided them throughout the training

All the participants were amazed to see his finely handcrafted products for which he has received various awards .

TURNING

It is one of the most basic machining process, that is the part is rotated (work piece) while a single point cutting tools is moved parallel to the axis of rotation.

Lathe removes undesired material from a rotating work piece in the form of chips with the help of a tool which is traversed (pass through) across the work and can be fed deep in work. The lathe is a machine tool which holds the work piece between two rigid and strong supports called centers or in a chuck or face plate which revolves (rotate). The cutting tool is rigidly held and supported in a tool post which is fed against the revolving work. The normal cutting operations are performed with the cutting tool fed either parallel or at right angles to the axis of the work.

TRAININGS

BASKET WEAVING

Bamboo basket weaving is an age old practice. It is a simple process starting with splitting of bamboo into thin strips. The strips are split in two shapes flat and round to make different kinds of basket. Further these strips are dyed as per the requirement in natural or chemical colors.

There are three main parts of the basket; base, side walls and rim. Using the same weaving technique, beautiful lamps with various forms, trendy colors has been designed.

They were introduced to chemical and natural dyeing techniques.

CHEMICAL DYEING NATURAL DYEING

JEWELRY

Jewelry is a product which needs less raw material & tools compared to other crafts.

In the training, participants were guided to make jewelry from Weaved mat using fine slivers, Various design mat patterns,Geometric & organic shapes, Quilling techniques and profile cut earrings, chemical and natural dyeing techniques. They also made some bangles using weaving technique. Tools they used were basic pliers, forceps etc and Drill machine.

UTILITY PRODUCTS

Main concept of utility products training was to use Machine processed slats. These slats are of good quality compared to manual slats, clean, precise in form which makes the final product uniform, better quality and easy to mass produce. Pen stands, trays, photo frames, tea coasters, hangers are few of the products that have been developed using slats during training.

FINAL PRODUCT DISPLAY

VALEDICTORY FUNCTION

On the last day of the workshop all products developed during training were displayed. Brief presentation about designs, processes, activities and some glimpses of trainees were presented. Participants were congratulated with certificate of participation by Mr. Ban Roy, Deputy Manager, Kerala Bureau of Industrial Promotion, Kerala and Dr. Abhinav Kant, In-charge, BCDI.

CLUSTER VISIT
