The initial brief from the architect was that she wanted the studentsto be able to read how the building was constructed and create anenviromentally friendly energy efficient school. This evolved findinga way to leave main structural elements such as the large glulambeams and brick peers exposed but yet eliminate cold bridgingand achieve a sufficient U-Value of the main elements. Wedecided to utilise the large brick peers for natural stack ventilationas well as an area to transfer services from each level without theservices being viable. The central atrium in each building is used toaid the ventilation as well as maintaining a link to the outside space.The idea was to orientate the three school buildings around acentral courtyard area and divide the use of each building in such away as to encourage movement of the students from one buildingto another during different stages of the day. The buildings havebeen designed to take advantage of as much solar gain aspossible with largely glazed facades and optimal rotation of eachbuilding. An extensive green roof has been incorporated to reducesurface water run off around the site. In order to improve thebuildability of the school, each building uses the same pallet ofmaterials as well as the same construction techniques . Thiscreates similar construction details throughout the three buildingsand should improve the speed and efficiency of the build. Overallthe build should perform with a high level of energy efficiency andcreate a comfortable learning environment for the students.
