PROJECT

Helsinki : Hanoi

This is a short summary about a year-long school project that I was involved in between 2010 and 2011.

The project was a fundamental part of my IDBM master’s level studies at the Aalto University in Finland.

THE TEAM:

A dynamic team of four from the Aalto University IDBM program with multidisciplinary skills – ranging from business to technology to design.

Antti-Pekka Joona Lynn …and me!

Design a web-based tool to measure the

innovativeness of Vietnamese SMEs

THE PROJECT BRIEF:

””

?!THE FIRST REACTION:

What did we know in the beginning?

”A MEASUREMENT TOOL FOR INNOVATIVENESS”

FOR THE VIETNAMESE CONTEXT…

And this resulted in more questions.

So honestly, not a lot.

In the numerous group sessions during the following months, we started to analyse the case further.

What are the tools available?

What does innovativeness look like?

How can we measure it?

What will the result be at the

end?

How can we help?

What is the real objective behind this task?

Can innovativeness be measured?

Is there any point in measuring it?Who needs this?

Why would a company want to measure it’s innovativeness? Reason’s for Finland’s

success?

What do we know about the Vietnamese culture and companies?

How to create a honey pot effect with a measuring tool?

Firstly, about the project itself….

Secondly, who was this mysterious ”client” of ours? ...and in Vietnam!?

What is Open Innovation Forum?

What is IPP?

What’s the budget like?

Why partner with Aalto

University?

No Facebook?

What are we going to do in Vietnam for 2 weeks?

Why would Finland want to help Vietnam?

What are IPP’s objectives?

Can the previous year’s students guide us?

Why can’t they do it themselves?

After some more research, meetings and interviews, we were able to map out the client, their need and our role in all of this…

Partnership program between Finland and VietnamGoal: Improve innovative processes in Vietnam

One year school industry projectGoal: Create value for IPP through OIF

There were 3 players in the project…

IPP’s web platform in the very early phases Goal: Improve IPP’s online presence in Vietnam

Since Finland is one of leading countries in terms of innovativeness…

Next, we had to figure out what to offer the guys in Vietnam…

…our mission was to find out some of the “secrets ingredients” behind this success...…and then a way to import them to Vietnam.

We interviewed Finnish academia, entrepreneurs, public research organizations, financers, start-ups, and fellow students in order to get to the bottom of it.

But we also needed to figure out how to make these “secrets ingredients” feasible for the Vietnamese context and culture.

The result was a framework for an innovation concept with 3 themes:

Inspire Awareness

Connect

Business Success StoriesTheme of the Month

Test / “Wake up”

NetworkIPP events

So we got the school to buy us 4 iPads.

And then we created the concept prototype with the iPads.

We also needed a prototype.

They looked like this..

°°A°°

In February 2011, we changed scenery for 2 weeks…

…and continued the project in Hanoi.

With the help of 5 local students whom we had recruited earlier…

…we organized a seminar on innovativeness at the Hanoi

University…

…and interviewed and tested our concept prototype with over 20 local

companies!

…we analyzed and developed the results further…

…combined them with our wireframe and ideas for the online platform…

…while not forgetting our prototype and the innovativeness measurement tool requested by our client.

And the end result?

IPP started immediately setting up and developing the

new web platform for OIF.

+ +

…as well as some local twists and nuances…

By adding together our features and elements…

…by May 2011, the Open Innovation Forum platform was up and running to provide online presence and a forum for

Vietnamese SMEs!

This project was successfully completed and I enjoyed the hard work.

However, it’s just one of the many projects that I’ve been involved in!
