CONTENTS AND OBJECTIVES:

This programme represents the second edition of a course which has been previously given at Khalifa University (Sharja Campus) in October 2012. Its objective is to provide an introduction to the main topics related to innovation management. In particular, at the end of the course, participants should have familiarized with:- the management of innovation and the concept of open innovation, applied to

technology as well as business models,- the roles of private and public research activities, intellectual property management

and technology transfer,- the steps necessary for setting up a new high-­tech business, using an innovative

business model canvas.

The course is structured in four (non consecutive) days. Classes will combine upfront presentations by instructors and discussion of reading materials assigned to students. The books and readings indicated will be covered in class by the various presentations;; advance reading is encouraged.Instructors will provide students with the opportunity to interact, present their questions and focus into specific topics that will emerge during discussions. The final day will be dedicated to students’ presentations, feedbacks and working groups.Andrea Piccaluga and Andrea Paraboschi are also available to informally meet students from the 2012 edition.

LOCATION

The first edition of the course has taken place at Sharjah Campus of Khalifa University of Science, Technology & Research (KUSTAR), Emirate of Sharjah. The second one will take place in the Abu Dhabi Campus.

Day 2: Open Innovation in practice: the Business Model Innovation Journey(Monday, November 18th)

At the end of the morning of Day 2, participants will be invited to start thinking about a possible new business idea that they will work on for the rest of the course. For this purpose, they will be divided into (probably) four groups and will be given a template to be used to work on the project and present the results of their work on the last day of the course.During the afternoon of Day 2 the instructors will stay in the university if the participants will wish to interact with them, for example for selecting the business idea, working on the first steps, etc.

There will be no lectures on this day. However, participants can self-­organize and work in the groups to go on with the team work.

INSTRUCTORSAndrea PiccalugaAndrea Piccaluga is Professor of Innovation Management at the Istituto di Management, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (www.sssup.it), where he is Deputy Director and coordinator of the PhD programme in Management. He is member of the board of Netval (www.netval.it), the Italian network of University Technology Transfer Offices and r e spons i b l e o f t he annua l su r vey o f Pro t on Eu rope (www.protoneurope.org). He holds a PhD from Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and a Master in Technology and Innovation Management from SPRU (University of Sussex, Brighton). He is Associate editor of the R&D Management Journal and Creativity and Innovation Management Journal. He collaborates with large and medium-­sized companies (Knauf, Ansaldo Energia, Loccioni, TT Venture, Bassilichi, etc.) in the field of Open Innovation and with the regional governments of Puglia (Arti), Tuscany and Emilia Romagna in the field of policies for entrepreneurship and technology transfer. He is member of the board of Elesta srl, a joint venture between Esaote and El.En. and SIAF (Scuola Internazionale di Alta Formazione) in Volterra. He has published books and papers in the field of R&D management and technology transfer.

Andrea Paraboschi (www.paraboschi.it)

Andrea is PhD candidate at the Istituto di Management at Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna. His research activities are focused on Innovation and Business Modeling for ICT and TELCO industries. Andrea previously worked for Vodafone Italy in Milan headquarters as Marketing Specialist and at Technicolor in Rome as cinema post-­production engineer. He holds a Bachelor and Master's Degree in Cinema and Media Engineering from Politecnico di Torino, an Alta Scuola Politecnica Diploma and a II level Masters Degree in Management of Innovation from Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna. Andrea is a member of World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers Community, Milan node.

Luca Ascari (www.ascariluca.eu)

Luca Ascari received the Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Parma (Italy) in 2000. He spent one year in Philips Research Labs;; in 2001 he was with Marconi Photonics Research Labs. In 2002 he joined Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (CRIM Lab) where he worked in several public and private-­funded international research projects and obtained the PhD Degree in Bioengineering, focus on medical Robotics (with honours) in 2005. Until 2007 he continued his research here and at IMT (Lucca, Italy), in the field neuromorphic systems for tactile and vestibular perception in robotics.He has been visiting scientist at Pazmany University and Analogic and Neural Computing Lab, Budapest, Hungary, at Forschungszentrum Informatik FZI, Karlsruhe, Germany, and at Department of Integrative Medical Biology, Physiology Section, Umeå University, Sweden. In 2007 he founded Henesis, where he now serves as President and CEO.Dr. Ascari collaborated from 2007 to 2010 with the Centre of Excellence for Information, Communication and Perception Engineering (CEIICP) of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, in the field of diffuse optical tomography for cardiac applications. He co-­authored more than 30 scientific publications in international journals and conferences, as well as six patents;; he serves as expert reviewer for the European Commission.Since 2009 he serves as national advisor in the AGESCI Italian Boy Scout Association.

Participants will be required to fill evaluation questionnaires at the end of the course.
