Warm Up for Wednesday (2/8)• Look at the back of a PC in the lab to see how all of the cables

are connected to the system. • How comfortable do you feel if you were asked to disconnect

and then re-connect all of the cables? Think about the first time that you saw those cables. Were you intimidated by the complexity of them?

• How did you learn to make the connections to the computer?

Housekeeping for Wednesday (2/8)• Chapter 5 Begins today

• Test in 3 weeks• Chapter 4 Retakes will be Friday after school

• Will give a grade on test based on the following• If highest of two scores is first score, then use first score• If highest of two scores is second score, then will take second score minus

first score, divide by two and add to first score

Objectives for Wednesday (2/8)• Explore and identify the physical aspects, including the ports,

cables and interfaces needed to connect to and configure a Cisco router.

• Console Port• Auxiliary Port• Ethernet Ports• Serial Ports

• Distinguish between the ports and slots based upon the naming convention.

• Syntax = slot/port• Example Ethernet0/0 and Ethernet0/1

Activities for Wednesday (2/8)• Explore the router interfaces• Complete the Router Interfaces worksheet

Warm up for Thursday (2/9)• Review link on Chapter 5 Page• Channel Service Unit/Data Service Unit (CSU/DSU)

Objectives for Thursday (2/9)

1.Compare and contrast the types of memory in a Cisco router.2.Identify key processes of what takes place when a Cisco router

boots;3.Compare and contrast the Startup Configuration Versus the

Running Configuration

Compare types of memory in cisco router

1.ROM (Read-Only Memory)2.Flash Memory3.Volatile RAM) – VRAM4.Non-Volatile RAM -NVRAM

Identify the boot process of a cisco router (5.1.3)

1. POST (Power On Self Test) – hardware test2. Bootstrap locates the IOS in flash and load into RAM3. Bootstrap locates and loads startup configuration file

Compare the startup configuration to the running configuration (5.1.3)

Startup Configuration Running Configuration

Permanent Temporary

Loaded at startup Not saved

Objectives for Friday (2/9)• Divide class into three router teams (Router 1, Router 2,

Router 3)• Connect a computer to the router using the console interface;

Housekeeping for Friday• Read at night and work on study guide!• Two new links on Chapter 5 module – read them!

Router Teams• Router 1

• Router 2

• Router 3

Configure HyperTerminal• Configure HyperTerminal so the computer can communicate

with the router (take turns creating and connecting)

• Com Port: 1• Bits Per Second: 9600• Data bits: 8• Parity: None• Stop bits: 1• Flow control: None

Housekeeping for Monday (2/12)

• SkillsUSA Medals• After School Tutorials for Subnetting

• Monday through Thursday• 3:20 – 3:50• Retake Chapter 4 Friday

Objectives for Monday• Compare and contrast the Security Device Manager (SDM) to

that of the CLI• Review the features of the SDM• What features does it offer

Objectives for Monday (2/12)

• Describe the process of what happens when the IOS does NOT load;• ROMMon mode;

• Compare the CLI command modes• User EXEC mode• Priviledge EXEC mode

• Compare and contrast In-Band versus Out-Of-Band;

Housekeeping for Tuesday (2/14)

• Review classroom behavior from yesterday• Talking during lecture• Distractions during activity• Web Browser with Game• Phone• Talking during instruction of acitivity

• Setup classroom expectations• After school tutorials today (3:20)

Review for Tuesday (2/14)• What is ROMMON?• What is Startup configuration versus Running Configuration?• What is In-Band versus Out-Of-Band Management?

Objectives for Tuesday (2/14)

o Identify the Command Modes and their functionality on a Cisco router

o Change the name of the router.o Perform the various show commands of User Exec and Priv Exec

mode

Objectives for Wednesday• Identify various functions of the SDM (Security Device

Manager)• Compare and contrast the differences between the following

interface modes:• SDM

• In Band ONLY• GUI buttons and textboxes

• IOS• In Band OR Out of Band• Command-line only

Objectives for Wednesday (2/15)

• Explore SDM Express interface

• 10.10.10.1• 255.255.255.0

Objectives for Thursday (2/16)• Identify features used in CLI’s previously recalled commands• Stores 10 most recent commands• Up Arrow OR Down Arrow shows one at a time• Only good for current session (not previous sessions).

• Using the Show commands• Show running-config• Show interfaces• Show arp• Show ip route• Show protocols• Show version

Identify WAN Technologies used on a Cisco router (5.2.3)

• Define a WAN connection• Serial• Slower• Requires a telecommunications provider• Same protocol required at both ends• Each protocol is encapsulated (like frames and packets)

• Identify three encapsulation protocols• HDLC • Frame Relay• PPP

Housekeeping for Friday (2/17)• Volunteer(s) to help present to the 8th grade class per Cisco

Networking Academy and class.• April 12 @ 10:45

• Home Work• Study Guide• Labs and packet tracers

• Chapter 4 retake after school today for individuals who have come to after school tutoring

Objectives for Friday (2/17)• Interface Status

FastEthernet 0/0 is up, line protocol is up

• Are they up or are they down and what does that mean?• Why are there two?

• First part is hardware, second part is software• http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/11_3/configfun/comm

and/reference/frshowse.html#wp3129

Activity for Friday (2/17)• Configuring interfaces on a router• Team lab• Each member participates for team

• Issuing configuration commands• Helping to issue configuration commands

• Each team will get a grade

Objectives for Tuesday (2/21)• Compare and contrast the use of passwords on the Cisco IOS:• PRIV mode access

• Enable password (5.3.4.1)• Enable secret (5.3.4.1)

• Console Password (out of band) – 5.3.4.3• Over the network (in band) – 5.3.4.3

• Service Password Encryption

Objectives for Wednesday (2/22)• Compare and contrast Data Communications Equipment (DCE)

with that of Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) (5.3.5);• DCE (provides the clock rate)• DTE (accepts the clock rate)

• Configure the serial and ethernet interface of a Cisco router. (Packet Tracer 5.3.5.4)

Objectives for Tuesday• Explain a Default Route• Destination IP Address• Routing Table

Objectives for Wednesday• Connect two Cisco 1600 routers, configure routers with same

network ID to connect;• Test connection with successful pings of each router• Identify the interfaces of each.
