Those landforms which have a height of 900 metres or more above sea level are called mountains.

Mountains have been dividedinto four on the basis of their origin.

MOUNTAINS

Fold Mountains

Block Mountains

Relict Mountains

Volcanic Mountains

FOLD MOUNTAINS Most of the mountains we see today are

fold mountains. They are higher when comparedto othermountains. Eg. Mt. Everest

Block mountains The block mountains are formed as a

result of uplift by land forms due to faulting.

Eg: Black forest

Relict mountain Due of the different weathering processes of prolonged

duration, the rocks that are not very resistant get disintegratedand only those resistant part remain. These mountains are calledrelict mountains. Eg: The Aravalli ranges and Nilgiris in India.

Volcanic mountainsVolcanic mountains are caused when molten rock

flows out onto the earth is surface through fissures that arecaused due to the movement of plates.

Eg: Mt. Fujiyama in Japan
