Literacy standards 'fall short'

England is being overtaken by other leading nations because progress on literacy has stalled, according to chief schools inspector Sir Michael

Wilshaw.

"Our standards should be higher."

During any inspection, the teaching of English will be observed across the curriculum, to ensure

that similar demands of pupils are being made when they are reading, writing or undertaking

speaking and listening activities in any subject, as those demands that would be made of them in

English lessons.
