Understanding the computer is very easy because the act of computer is computing and everybody practices computing e.g. calculating, measurements e.t.c Do you know that Computers are everywhere: at work, at school, and at home. People use all types and sizes of computers for a variety of reasons and in a range of places. While some computers sit on top of a desk or on the floor, mobile computers and mobile devices are small enough to carry. Mobile devices, such as many cell phones, often are classified as computers.

Page 17: Free Computer Training - Computer Literacy

From the computer, you can make a telephone call, meet new

friends, share opinions or life stories, book flights, shop, fill

prescriptions, file taxes, take a course, receive alerts, and

automate your home. At home or while on the road, people use

computers to manage schedules and contacts, listen to voice mail

messages, balance check books, pay bills, transfer funds, and buy

or sell stocks. At school, teachers use computers to assist with

classroom instruction. Students complete assignments and

conduct research on computers in lab rooms, at home, or

elsewhere. Instead of attending class on campus, some students

take entire classes directly from their computer.

BEFORE WE BEGIN,

WHAT IS A COMPUTER?

Page 20: Free Computer Training - Computer Literacy

What is a Computer? A computer is an electronic device that accepts data as input, processes it through its processing unit and gives its result as an output or information. A computer system is an embodiment of parts that function towards a goal.

Page 21: Free Computer Training - Computer Literacy

COMPUTER AND ITS PARTS The Parts of the computer is divided into two, they are:- A. The Main Parts: They are the CPU, VDU & the Keyboard B. The Peripherals: They are the other parts of the computer e.g. Mouse, Plotter, Joystick, Microphone, Speaker, Scanner, Light Pen e.t.c Lets take a look at the diagram of a computer system.

Page 22: Free Computer Training - Computer Literacy
Page 23: Free Computer Training - Computer Literacy
Page 24: Free Computer Training - Computer Literacy

TYPES OF COMPUTER Analog Computer: Generally used in taking readings, measurements and mostly diagnostic tools e.g. thermometer, ammeter, stethoscope, barometer, voltmeter, ruler, Tape rule etc. Their outputs are in form of graphs and curves. Digital Computer: They are mostly found in business environments, their outputs are in form of digits, e.g. Calculators, Mobile Phones, Laptops, Digital Clocks etc. Hybrid Computer: This is the combination of analog and digital features; the hybrid computer can take readings and display its information in form of digits e.g. electronic scales found in petrol filling stations, digital thermometers etc.

Page 25: Free Computer Training - Computer Literacy

CLASSES OF COMPUTER Computers are classified by their sizes i.e. by their sizes you shall know them, the classes of computers are:-

Micro Computers: They are small or portable computers e.g. laptops, mobile phones, I Pads, Notebook Computers etc. Mini Computers: They are medium computers, bigger than the micro-computers but smaller than the mainframe computers e.g. Photocopiers etc.

Mainframe Computers: They are large computers found in organizations or business environment and are mostly referred to as room computers because of their sizes, A mainframe is a large, expensive, powerful computer that can handle hundreds or thousands of connected users simultaneously Mainframes Store tremendous amounts of data, instructions, and information e.g. Lifts in companies, ATM Machines e.t.c

OPERATING A COMPUTER SYSTEM

Turning the Computer On ; Let's get started!

To turn a computer on, simply press the power button once

(no need to hold the button—just press and release).

Once you turn the computer on, the computer will go through a series of

automated tasks before it is ready for you to interact with it; this process is

called “startup.” This process will last between one and two minutes. Its just

like when you put on your phone, it boots and you cant use it till it gets to the

last screen and this last screen is referred to as the desktop screen..

If the computer is performing as it should, however, you

will probably see one of the following screens:

UNDERSTANDING THE BASIC TOOLS FOR WORKING WITH THE COMPUTER: The Keyboard and the Mouse are the main tools you must understand when working with computer… THE KEYBOARD The Keyboard is an input device generally used for typing; there are two types of keyboard and they are: ~ Standard Keyboard (85Keys) ~ Enhanced Keyboard (101-102 keys etc.)

Page 31: Free Computer Training - Computer Literacy

LETS UNDERSTAND THE KEYBOARD The keyboard is made up of several keys:- •LETTER KEYS: A-Z KEYS •NUMBER KEYS: 0-9, +, - KEYS •ALPHA-NUMERIC KEYS: combination of LETTER and NUMBER KEYS •CUSOR KEYS: also called the ARROW KEYS •SPACEBAR KEY: used to insert SPACES when typing

Page 32: Free Computer Training - Computer Literacy

…still on the keys:- •BACKSPACE KEY: used to delete a character to the left •CTRL KEY: this is the control key •ALT KEY: this is the alternate key •FUNCTION KEY: they are the F1-F12 KEYS •ESC KEY: this is the ESCAPE KEY •OTHER KEYS: Page Up key, Page Up, Del key, Tab, home, end e.t.c

Page 33: Free Computer Training - Computer Literacy

SOME SHORTCUTS YOU NEED TO KNOW:- Using the shortcuts is easy but you need to combine keys to be able to use this; ¬ ¬ ¬ CTRL + A = SELECT ALL CTRL + B = BOLD CTRL + C= COPY CTRL + D= DUPLICATE SELECTED OBJECT CTRL + E= CENTRE ALIGNMENT CTRL + F= FIND CTRL + G= GROUP CTRL + H= REPLACE CTRL + I= ITALIC CTRL + J= JUSTIFY ALIGNMENT CTRL + K INSERT HYPERLINK

The Mouse The mouse is an input device generally used for clicking… it is called the mouse because it looks so small when ever you see it on your desktop screen and it runs as fast as you move your hands. It is controlled by you. Types of clicking:- 1. Left clicking 2. Right Clicking 3. Double clicking

Page 37: Free Computer Training - Computer Literacy

LEFT CLICKING SIMPLY MEANS TAPPING WITH THE LEFT BOTTON OF THE MOUSE. IT IS USED TO SELECT AN OBJECT. It is the MAIN CLICK.

Page 38: Free Computer Training - Computer Literacy

RIGHT CLICKING SIMPLY MEANS TAPPING WITH THE RIGHT BOTTON OF THE MOUSE. IT IS USED TO VIEW MORE OPTION OF AN OBJECT SELECTED.
