Multiple Bets

1

What are the odds of throwing three 6's in a row?

• Even if you throw three 6’s in a row, the odds of you throwing another 6 are still 5/1!

• However, the odds of you throwing 3 sixes in a row one after the other is 215/1.

(5/1 x 5/1 x 5/1) = (6 x 6 x 6 – 1) = 215/1

Now let’s do an example with horses:

2

• Let us use a horse racing example to show the odds with a multiple throw of the dice.

• Throwing three sixes in a row are an example of what we call a multiple bet. It’s like you betting on three horses in three races, each at 5/1.

• For example:Race 1: Horse number 7 @ 5/1 = (5 + 1 = 6)Race 5: Horse number 5 @ 5/1 = (5 + 1 =6) Race 8: Horse number 3 @ 5/1 = (5 + 1 =6)

• Multiply 6 x 6 x 6 = 216 – 1 = 215. The odds are therefore 215/1.

• For R10 you will get R2150 or R4250 for R20, R6450 for R30.

• Now you must fly solo:3

Odds in a Multiple bet (Exercise)

• Calculate the odds you will receive if you placed a multiple bet on the following events (taken directly from the Turf Sport database):

Greyville (23/12/2011) • Race 1: HALLOWED @ 2.5 (5/2)• Race 3: BOULEVARD @ 9 (9/1)• Race 5: FLAMING AL @ 1 (1/1)• Race 6: RAGING RIVER @ 5 (5/1)

4

(2.5 +1) x (9 + 1) x (1 + 1) x (5 + 1)3.5 x 10 x 2 x 6 = 420 – 1 = 419/1

Exercise

1 Convert the following computer odds into fractions• 0.25 _____________________

• 0.3 _____________________

• 1.5 _____________________

• 2.5 _____________________

• 1 _____________________

• 0.70 _____________________

• 0.33 _____________________

• 0.55 _____________________ 5

1/1

0.3/1 (x 10) = 3/10

0.25/1 = 25/100 (x 10) = 1 / 4 (divide by 25)

1.5/1 (x 10) = 15/10

2.5/1 (x 10) = 25/10 = 5/2 (divide by 5)

0.7/1 (x 10) 7/10

0.33/1 (x 100) = 33/100 1/3 (divide by 33)

0.55/1 (x 100) = 55/100 = 11/20 (divide by 5)

2. If a horse is 7/1, how much must a punter invest to win R1000?

6

Training Exercise (Page 6)

7000/1000 = 1000/140 = R1000/R140 = R140

3 A punter takes a multiple on Vertigo Bay (horse) at 2/1 and Arsenal at 9/10. The bet is 1000/200. Vertigo Bay is scratched at the start and Arsenal win. What will the final bet read?

7

Training Exercise (Page 6)

Vertigo Bay’s odds fall away and so the odds are only 9/10If the punter wants to win R1000, they will have to pay R1100 =

1000/1100or if he spends a stake of R200 then he stands to win 180 = 180/200

4 The Turfsport database indicates a horse at odds 0.17. A punter asks how much he stands to win for a stake of R100. What do you tell him?

8

Odds are 1/6 = 17/100 = R17

Training Exercise (Page 6)

5. A punter asks how much his stake will be if he wants to win R1 000 on Manchester United at odds of 1.8. What do you tell him?

9

1.8 = 18/10 = 1000/550 =His stake will be R550

Training Exercise (Page 6)

In the event of two horses dead heating for 1st place, bets on these horses will be halved (both winnings and stake).Example:• Winner no 1 bet is 1000/400. His bet, because he has backed half a

winner due to the dead heat, will become 500/200 and the payout will be R670 (R500 less 6% tax plus half his stake). He loses half his stake (R200).

• Winner no 2 bet is 1000/70. His bet, because he has also backed half a winner, will become 500/35 and the payout will be R505 (R500 less 6% tax plus R35 stake). He also loses half his stake (R35).
