Heroes under the microscope

Today we are going to:

• Consider the different qualities that a hero has.

• Examine why we seek to create and celebrate heroes.

Take a few minutes to think about the qualities that you believe a hero has (e.g. bravery) and write them down.

Then write a list of people you think could be described as heroes (e.g. soldiers).

Think

Now compare your lists with a partner and discuss the similarities and differences between them.

As you go along, edit your lists according to the outcomes of your discussion.

Pair & share

How can you best organise your list?

Heroic qualities

Physical Mental

Social Moral

Why are these traits (qualities) considered to be ‘heroic’?

Heroic people?

How else could your list of heroic people have been organised and what would that have

revealed?

What, then, determines whether we consider an individual, or a group of people, to be

heroes or not?

IS the word ‘hero’ overused?

Does a person’s choice of heroes tells us something about them?

What do my heroes tell you about my values and beliefs?

Who are your heroes? What are their heroic qualities? Why are they your heroes? What does this say about you?
