Illuminated Manuscripts An illuminated manuscript is a manuscript in

which the text is supplemented by the addition of decoration (in the letters, borders, or miniature illustrations).

Earliest surviving illuminated manuscripts are from the gothic period (400-600 ce) primarily in Ireland, Constantinople, and Italy.

The majority of surviving manuscripts are from the Middle Ages.

The majority of Illuminated Manuscripts are religious in nature (often created by Monks).

The Process is long and expensive so only the wealthy could afford them.
