Blended Learning:the Best of Both Worlds

Dana Ortmandortman@reyn.org

We challenge you....

to think about ALL

of the resources available… and to make the best instructional

decisions to facilitate learning.

Blended Learning What is it?

Face-to-face & Technology-based Instruction Joining Hands

Why?We are preparing our children for jobs that

 do not exist today.

We need life-long learners.

We need learning to be...

what ever, when ever, & where ever

This is about learning...

•teach them HOW to learn

•ENGAGE them, let them engage

•make it MEANINGFUL

•let them be PRODUCTIVE

A typical week

Monday – Teacher led instruction to introduce topic for the week.

Tuesday – Students work on on/off-line assignments and are able to access on-line resources to review and supplement instruction during class hours.

Wednesday – Teacher reviews topic and assignments with students.

Thursday – Students are given time to work on activities on-line/off line which reinforces topic and then take an assessment. Friday – Teacher presents cultural activity and/or students are given time to work on activity/project.

Advantages

• Students will be better

prepared for college. • Having a para-

professional.

will allow for more one-

on-one instruction and

assessment. • More students will have

the opportunity to take

FL in middle school.

• Students will given more responsibility for their own learning

• Teacher will be able to monitor and engage, motivate and direct student learning.

• Students will still be able to participate in fiestas, Latin music and other cultural activities together.

• Same Curriculum as high school - ¡Exprésate!

• This blended approach combines the best elements of online and face-to-face learning.

“Blended learning should be viewed as a pedagogical approach that combines the effectiveness and socialization opportunities ofthe classroom with the technologically enhanced active learning possibilities of the online environment, rather than a ratio of delivery modalities.

In other words, blended learning should beapproached not merely as a temporal construct, but rather as a fundamental redesign of theinstructional model.
