OBJECTIVES OF THE SESSION

• PWBAT understand the importance and need to integrate values in the classroom.

• PWBAT discuss performance tasks that they can use in their classrooms in order to integrate values and mindsets.

QUESTION 1:

What is the reality of the world we live in right now and what will the world look like 40/50 years from now?

THE WORLD TODAY

• Two billion are in extreme poverty (a slide with each one of these sentences and a picture depicting it)

• The rich-poor divide is the highest• Nature is being pillaged like never before• Mass urbanization is destroying village life• Economic growth is unsustainable• Science is used for mass destruction

• Corruption is rampant and our democratic governments are failing us. Voter turn out has been on the decline for the past couple of decades.

• Oscar Wilde said that we are in an age where we know the price of everything and the value of nothing. He said this in 1890 but I think it still holds true today. How do we make sure our kids value the priceless?

THE WORLD 40-50 YEARS FROM NOW

QUESTION 2:

for 5 minutes

Two major ways to teach values in class:

• Intrinsically• Extrinsically

QUESTION 3 :So take a few minutes to look at the values that you prioritized in the previous question. Figure out which one you personally need to work on. Now discuss with a partner how you will embody this value as a person and as a role model for your kids.

Teaching Values extrinsically:

WHY performance tasks?

QUESTION 4 :
