Dealing with Job LossDealing with Job Loss

A 30 year old male client comes to see a local career counseling agency

after losing his job…..

During his first appointment, he meets with a young career counselor

named Beth….

Counselor: Hello, My name is Beth Johnson and I am a career

counseling specialist. Before we get started, I’d like to go over this

informed consent agreement with you and have you sign it once we’re

finished.

Counselor: Now that we have that finished, can you tell me a little about

yourself?

Client:  Well, my name is Michael Todd and I have been recently laid off from the Tyson plant here in town. It happened all of a sudden and I

don’t know what to do. I am depressed because I can’t find another job, my kids are getting

ready for school and I can’t pay for their supplies, and my bills are getting larger because I am behind on paying them.

Counselor: Do you have any other training?

Client: No, I have been at that stupid job for too long. I went to work there right

after high school. It was fast money and it paid good for this area. You would think

that they would want to keep me. No, they kept the other ones. I must not have been

that important to them.

Counselor: How are you managing to pay your bills and everyday life

needs at this time?

Client: Well, my wife works for the grocery store here in town and I

have landed odd jobs here and there. It makes me feel bad that I cannot

support my family. I think that Tyson had planned on shutting down a long time

ago. I should have seen it.

Counselor: It sounds like you feel frustrated because you have been

laid off from your job with little notice and you want to help support your

family.

Client: Yes, that’s it exactly.

Counselor: Can you tell me what some of your future goals are?

Client: I want to get a good job that I actually like, get caught up on mybills, and maybe go on a vacation.

Counselor: How do you think you

can obtain those goals?

Client:  Well, I think that I will need some type of training. I have no

idea what is going on in the work world. I will need to find some kind

of job or means of income while I am getting the training because my

wife cannot pay all of the bills herself.

Counselor: Ok, we can look at what your current work skills are, what interests and

abilities you have, and what careers interest you. We can assist you in filling out a resume

and job applications if you like, toget you started for a temporary job. I would also

like to administer the Self-Directed Search (SDS) and the Strong Interest Inventory along with DISCOVER which could help you make a

career choice.

Client: That all sounds pretty good. I was feeling like there were no

optionsout there for me.

Counselor: I understand that all of these new changes can be

overwhelming, but you are here talking with me, trying to make a

future for yourself and your family. That says a lot about your character.

Client: Well, I felt hopeless. I guess you never know what to expect.

Counselor: It sounds like you are not experiencing  just a job loss.

There are many changes that you have talked about and it will take

time to readjust to it.

Client: Thank you. I am starting to feel better already just from talking with you today. When can I start

taking those inventories?

Counselor: Let’s start by setting up another appointment for next week. I’m so glad that you came in to see

me today and I look forward to working with you in the future!
