R Corner What a storm we had last week! Even Canadians like me were impressed with the amount of snow that we got! I truly believe that times of challenge can bring out the best in people. All around our shul and our community incredible strength was displayed in helping others and supporting the values we believe in during the storm. As I waded through snow up to my chest on Shabbat morning, I passed a Jewish neighbor who was outside on their driveway and she said to me “Rabbi do you think you will have a min-yan today at your shul?” I was so proud to be able to say to her with confidence: “Yes, knowing the type of congregants I have I am sure of it.” When I got to shul, my assumptions were confirmed. Rabbi Sheinkopf’s Mishna Berura shiur was held, we had a minyan almost at the very beginning of davening, we had about 40 people by the end and even had a Kiddush. The same was the case later in the day for mincha/maariv. People displayed so much mesirut nefesh, so much self-sacrifice and effort to be in shul – that impressed me a lot. Over the week-end I heard many stories of how people banded together to shovel each other out after Shabbat and of how others made sure to bring supplies to those who were snowed in. I happened to be the one person who foolishly parked in the shul parking lot before Shabbat. Sunday morning I got calls from numerous people offering me a lift to shul. Once I arrived, I saw that the shul drive-way had been partially plowed but that my car was totally snowed in. By the time shul was over and I gathered my stuff together to leave I went outside to start clearing the way to my car and it was already done for me! What a chessed, what a kindness displayed by people who didn’t have to help at all, but did so out of the kindness of their hearts. This is the true meaning of what it means to be part of a community. Shabbat Shalom Rabbi Weinberg

REUNION IN ISRAEL
A reunion of people, formerly of greater Hartford who now live in Israel, is being planned for the later part of April in Jerusalem. Former Hartfordites, Devorah Weinrib Kidorf and Chaya Spatz Passow are coordinating this very exciting event. Sally Gelb is the local contact for names of family, friends with their e-mails and phone numbers. The list with the latest information will then be emailed by Devorah and Chaya to those interested. So far, the list contains more than 70 names! It should be a warm and won-derful happening! Sally can be contacted at: ernestgelb@sbcglobal.net or 860-233-4239

Giving and Receiving By Rabbi Mayer Twersky (www.torahweb.org)
The Torah presents the mitzvah of contributing to the mishkan in an unusual fashion. "V'yikchu Li teruma - Let them take for Me a portion (Artscroll translation). The Torah speaks of taking rather than giving even though ostensibly Bnai Yisroel are being called upon to give. Why? The Kli Yakar offers a beautiful explanation. In the realm of Torah and mitzvos he who gives (in actuality) receives in return much more than he has given. For example, says the Kli Yakar, a teacher of Torah gives of his time, his wisdom, and, ultimately, himself. Nevertheless, Chazal teach us "umitalmidai yoser mikulam", I have learned more from my disciples than my teacher. A teacher gives, but, in return, he receives even more than he has given. The Torah hints at this lesson by exhort-ing Bnai Yisroel to take a contribution to the mishkan. The contributors will be taking much more than they are giving. This perspective on life has profound implications. For instance, at times we may feel burdened by requests - both institutional and personal - for tzedaka. "I'm busy now. Why must you bother me once again?" is a thought which, at times, flashes through our minds and engenders resentment within us towards our fellow Jew. But, in reality, the opportunity of tzedaka outweighs the demand. We are be-ing approached for a finite sum, which, when given to a worthy cause, will yield eternal schar. The Vilna Gaon comments that the word venasnu, and they shall give, is (as spelled in the original He-brew) a palindrome. In light of the Kli yakar's insight, we can appreciate the significance of the palin-drome. Giving is cyclical because one always receives in return. The Torah "makes demands" on our time. (Time is not really ours, but that idea is best kept for some future occasion). It's time to learn, to daven, do chessed, etc. we silently wonder, "but when will I have time for myself?" When such plaintive questions arise, we would do well to review the lesson of "v'yikchu Li teruma"

Hello Everyone!
By now you have all received your invitations to the YIWH dinner taking place on March 3rd at the Lin-coln Education Center. Thank you to those of you who have sent in your gifts and RSVP's, your generosity and timeliness is much appreciated.
For those of you who haven't responded yet, please send in your responses this week so that we can plan accordingly.
The business directory is shaping up nicely and will go to print on February 25th, as such if you have any outstanding business cards to enter please submit those as well.
Included in the dinner program will be a Silent Auction! We are excited about the various auction items that have been graciously donated by local stores, NYC Restaurants and even some of our own mem-bers' services will be up for auction!! Stay tuned for more on this in the next few days.... We will also be holding an online auction prior to the dinner for ONE special item that can be 'used' at the dinner it-self.... getting excited yet??? We are!
On behalf of the dinner committee we look forward to hearing from each and every one of you and for celebrating our shul with you at this upcoming dinner.
Best,
Eli ~ Member of the dinner committee
