The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) released the annual updates of recom-mended immunization schedules for children andadolescents in the United States for 2011 on Feb-ruary 1, 2011. Children have three immunizationschedules: 0 to 6 years of age, 7 to 18 years ofage, and a catch-up immunization schedule forthose who start late or fall behind.
Remember to check the adult vaccineschedules too. They apply to staff andadult family members. The CDC rec-ommends that all adults who work withchildren receive Tdap vaccine once, regardless of when they last received a tetanusbooster. Tdap is the tetanus, diphtheria, and at-tenuated pertussis vaccine. Pertussis is the germthat causes whooping cough in children and bron-chitis in adults. Infants can die from whoopingcough they get from those who have not been im-munized. Adults of all ages should have a singledose of Tdap.
Those who have or anticipate having close contactwith infants and toddlers must get the shot to pro-tect these children who are too young to get all
their DTP shots. For the same reason, pregnantwomen who have not previously had Tdap shouldget the vaccine within hours after they deliver toavoid exposing their infants to whooping cough.
For more information, visit the CDC website:

Be a Gatekeeper
Youre the gatekeeper who decides what foods come into your kitchen. Give your kids a
healthful variety of foods. Then allow them to choose what to eat and how much from what
you offer.
Be a Role Model
Eat meals with your kids as often as you can
so they see you enjoying foods such as fruits,
vegetable, whole grains and lowfat milk.
Control Mindless Eating
Tune your hunger cues to halt mindless
eating. Teach kids to eat when they are
hungry, not just because it is a habit, like
snacking in front of the TV or taking a sec
ond helping just because its there.
Pay Attention to Your
Fullness Meter
Cancel you membership in the clean plate
club. Eat until youre satisfied, not overly
full. Teach your children to do the same in
stead of encouraging them to finish every
thing on their plates. It is good to start with
smaller portions if you are concerned about
wasting food.
Healthy Snack Time
When it comes to snacks, dont deny your
kids. Young children actually need snacks.Their stomachs are small, so meals alone
dont provide them the nutrients they need
in a day. A snack can be a mini meal such as
half of a sandwich, peanut butter on an apple,
or yogurt with chopped fruit. Keep snacks
such as cutup veggies, fruit and whole wheat
crackers upfront in the fridge or cabinet so
theyre easy for kids to see and grab. Dont
fall into the habit of using chips, cookies and
candy (which are treats) as everyday snack
choices.
Start the Day With Break-
fast
Make sure everyone eats breakfast, including
you. Offer quick options such as whole grain
cereal, yogurt, and pieces of fruit, lowfat
milk and 100% juice. Breakfast is also a good
time to think out of the box. There is nothing
wrong with a cheese sandwich on whole
wheat or a piece of leftover pizza full of veggies for breakfast.
Healthy EatingStart with the Basics
As a health educator, I am asked all the time; How can I get my kids to eat better? The fol
lowing guidelines are designed to give realistic ways to help children become healthy eaters.
Just remember when you are making changes to start small and add changes gradually.
