Wilson Webeloree: “Webelos of the High Seas”

The Webelos and Boy Scouts from the Wilson District enjoyed a great day of Scouting

on April 4-6 at Camp Charles. Webelos from different packs were mixed together and

assigned into patrols that would compete in different scouting activities, that way the

scouts could meet and learn how to work with new people. The Webelos scouts also

got to camp with their pack’s associated troops. That way the event can help

encourage Webelos to cross over to Boy Scouts.

Mike Summers did a fantastic job planning the 2014 Webeloree. He coordinated

activities put on by Troops 4, 60, 89, 185 and 381. Each activity had a sailor or pirate

theme. They included canon shooting, flag making, plank walking, sand castle

building, and fire building. Each Webelos Den also competed in a put put boat race.

The boats were made from material found around the house and were propelled by

steam. And, of course, a lot of boys went fishing during their free time.

The Webelos Den from Pack 185 took home top honors from the competition. Pack 89

and 381 came in second and third place. “Webelos on The High Seas” was an

awesome event.

Mike Summers, Event Chairman, Pack and Troop 89, holds up his beloved air horn. He used the horn to let everyone know when it is time to move stations. He also had fun scaring some adults into believing he was about blow it next to them.

Scouts on the orange team aim their golf ball cannon and are about to fire it by pulling the screwdriver out.

The cannon’s targets. Hitting a mast is worth 2 points. Hitting the ship (plywood) is worth one point.

Scouts from the yellow team play the “walking the plank” game. They need to resucue a swimmer by walking to him on the plank.

Byron Kilpatrick, Scoutmaster for Troop 381, works on his hiking stick while waiting for his next group to build a sand castle.

Boys from Pack 185 watch while they wait for their putt putt boat to start going around the pool on steam power. There is a lit candle under the piece of Diet Dr. Pepper Can that is heating up the water in the boat.

The yellow team is working on their sand castle.
