Opening Hymn

We sing our opening hymn:

O Father my Father

LH 850 CAL293

Robin Mann 1949- (1973)

O Father my Father

1. O Father, my Father, I call on your name;

my heart it is heavy with sorrow and shame.

For I’ve been a coward, my courage has flown,

and love lies within me as cold as a stone.

O Father my Father

2. No word can excuse me, no word that I say;

no place that I run to can hide me away.

For nothing is hidden; yes, all is revealed -

you see how I’m sick, Lord; I want to be healed.

O Father my Father

3. O Father, my Father, I call on your name;

your promise is with me to carry my blame.

You came as a servant, your road it was clear;

no coward was Jesus, for love knows no fear.

O Father my Father

4. O how I do wish that my last day was here,

that I might be with you where all is made clear;

where sorrow is over, the world is set free,

and that which we hope for we finally see.

FIRST READINGJonah 3:1-5,10

The city of Nineveh repents CEV

R: The first reading for 3rd Sunday after Epiphany is written in chapter three of Jonah beginning at verse 1.

Jonah 3:1-5,10Once again the LORD told Jonah

2to go to that great city of Nineveh and preach his message of doom.

3Jonah obeyed the LORD and went to Nineveh. The city was so big that it took three days just to walk through it.

Jonah 3:1-5,104After walking for a day, Jonah

warned the people, "Forty days from now, Nineveh will be destroyed!"

5They believed God's message and set a time when they would go without eating to show their sorrow. Then everyone in the city, no matter who they were, dressed in sackcloth.

Jonah 3:1-5,1010When God saw that the people

had stopped doing evil things, he had pity and did not destroy them as he had planned.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 62:5-12 CEV  R: The Psalm is Psalm 62

5Only God gives inward peace, and I depend on him.

C: 6God alone is the mighty rock that keeps me safe, and he is the fortress where I feel secure.

Psalm 62:5-12 CEV  R: 7God saves me and honours

me. He is that mighty rock where I find

safety. C: 8Trust God, my friends, and

always tell him each one of your concerns.

God is our place of safety.

Psalm 62:5-12 CEV  R: 9We humans are only a breath;

none of us are truly great. All of us together weigh less than a

puff of air.   C: 10Don't trust in violence

or depend on dishonesty or rely on great wealth.

Psalm 62:5-12 CEV  R: 11I heard God say two things: "I

am powerful, C: 12and I am very kind." The LORD rewards each of us

according to what we do. C: Glory to the Father, and the

Son, and the Holy Spirit;As it was in the beginning is

now and will be forever. Amen.

The second reading is written in chapter 7 of 1st Corinthians beginning at verse 29.

1 Corinthians 7:29-31

29My friends, what I mean is that the Lord will soon come, and it won't matter if you are married or not.

30It will be all the same if you are crying or laughing, or if you are buying or are completely broke.

1 Corinthians 7:29-31

31It won't make any difference how much good you are getting from this world or how much you like it. This world as we know it is now passing away.

This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

went to Galilee and told the good news that comes from God.

15He said, "The time has come! God's kingdom will soon be here. Turn back to God and believe the good news!“

Mark 1:14-20 16As Jesus was walking along the

shore of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were fishermen and were casting their nets into the lake.

Mark 1:14-20

• 17Jesus said to them, "Come with me! I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish."   18Right then the two brothers dropped their nets and went with him.

Mark 1:14-20 19Jesus walked on and soon saw

Abide with me v,1,3,4

LHS 543 CAL 293

Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847)

Abide with me

1. Abide with me; fast falls the eventide,

The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide:

When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,

Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Abide with me

3. I need Your presence every passing hour;

What but Your grace can foil the tempter’s power?

Who like Yourself, my guide and stay can be?

Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.

Abide with me

4. I fear no foe, with You at hand to bless:

Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.

Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?

I triumph still, if You abide with me. †
