January/February 2017

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year!

I can imagine that many of us will be wondering what 2017 will bring. Some

will be viewing the coming year with anticipation, some with apprehension

and perhaps some even with fear. A new year invariably heralds change of

some sort; as somebody once said to me, nothing stays the same forever, in

this world, change is inevitable. The question arises: should we regard all

change as inevitable? Indeed, perhaps we should be involved, support or even

instigate some changes, after all, we don’t live in a perfect world and some

changes would be for the better.

I am reminded of a well-known prayer:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;

The courage to change the things I can;

And the wisdom to know the difference.

Jesus Christ certainly brought about quite a few changes and his ministry

goes on changing the world for the better. Even so, the future can be unset-

tling for us all, but of course something that we can cling to is the timeless-

ness of God, and that he will be the same tomorrow as He is today and was

yesterday. St Paul makes this point in 2 Corinthians 4:16-18: even though our

outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day.

No matter what happens to us in the world in which we live, that part of us

which lives in Christ, remains the same and is as timeless and unchanging as

God.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

If all seems bewildering and chaotic, remember that wonderful old hymn by

Arthur Ainger: God is working His purpose out. There is purpose to the

world in which we live, though it is sometimes hard to see and understand.

With my prayers and best wishes,

Ron

NEWS FROM ST. MARY’s,WILBY

WILD WILLY BARRETT’S FRENCH CONNECTION - 11th March 2017 (see page 8)

You won’t find another band like Wild Willy Barrett’s French Connection. From a Parisian café via a

Dublin hooley to a New Orleans party with rip-roaring fiddle & banjo.

Imagine stumbling across a smoky back street bar, late night jam: Django Reinhardt & The Pogues;

Robert Johnson accompanies Edith Piaf; Bob Marley’s jammin’ with Stéphane Grappelli;

Tom Waits joins in. This is French Connection.

At the ensemble’s heart are the undisputed talents of multi-instrumentalist,

erstwhile Godfather of grunge folk, Wild Willy Barrett.

As the versatile and heartrending vocals of French singer Aurora Colson take centre stage,

the quartet perform stunning original compositions and arrangements on guitar, cello,

harmonium, whistle, fiddle, banjo and Irish pipes.

Enjoy a wonderful evening of unique musical entertainment overlaid with a large dose of dry humour,

very different from anything else you will experience in the UK at the moment.

NEWS FROM WILBY CEVC PRIMARY SCHOOL

A note from Headteacher Mrs Wiseman We are at the end of a wonderfully busy and productive Autumn term. In December we received a

call from the East Anglian Daily Times asking us to comment on the news that our school has achieved joint first place in the Suffolk Schools League Tables.

As we explained to the reporter, of course we are thrilled with our news and wish to say a big con-gratulations to last year’s Year 6. However, as wonderful as the children’s results are,

academic success is only part of the story here at Wilby.

We want our children to develop into well rounded confident children and so we continue to place great emphasis on the Arts, Sport and Citizenship by providing them with a wide array of educational

and life experiences. This term has been no exception, with our children taking part in a variety of musical/dramatic activities (from performing in plays and assemblies, to singing at Snape Maltings and playing brass in the local community); giving of their best in a wide-range of sporting activity;

supporting and taking part in and even organising their own charity fund-raising events. Our children are remarkable and we will continue to encourage them to be the best

that they can be in all areas of school life.

Church links/ Christian values On 28th November pupils from our Y1 class visited Bury Cathedral to take part in an active story

telling session based on the topic of Advent and on 9th December all children from Year 2 to Year 6 took part in an Advent activity in our own church at Wilby. The children thoroughly enjoyed both events which have helped to develop their understanding of the true meaning of Christmas. Pupils from both KS1 and 2 took part in our Pyramid Carol Service at Stradbroke High School on Friday

9th December - both brass players and singers sounded amazing. Our Wilby School Carol Service was held on Tuesday 20th December-it was, as always,

a very special celebration of the season.

Please do join us for our Advent Service in Wilby Church on Tuesday 15th of February at 2pm. A number of children also took part in a wonderful concert held in the Felixstowe Pavillion called the

Everlasting Light. This concert was organised to raise funds for Action Aid in Africa. Our Wilby brass group and choir performed in the Co op at Framlingham in December and raised £55 for EACH

-they then went on to provide a festive entertainment for residents of the Foxearth nursing home! On 15th of December Wren Class performed their brilliant play ‘A little bird told me’ which

beautifully retold the Christmas story from the point of view of a little robin.

General news: Kingfisher Class went on their second trip of the term on December 2nd - this time they visited Norwich Castle to learn more about the Romans and the Iceni. They had a brilliant day doing , amongst other things, some marching with Roman soldiers and making their own gold torcs!

Our Christmas Open day was well attended and our younger visitors were thrilled that Father Chrismas was able to join them. The school Fayre was a tremendous success raising over £1,000 for

the school funds - many thanks to all members of the community who attended.

NEWS FROM WILBY PARISH COUNCIL

Planning Application – Tannington Hall The council held a meeting on 13th December 2016 to consider a planning application for

a change of use of land and buildings at Tannington Hall as a wedding and events venue

with erection of marquees, camping area and car park. Council decided unanimously to

oppose the application on the grounds that: (a) there was insufficient detail provided on the

types of events and their management, (b) the level of noise (approval is being sought for

music events to be permitted between 8 am and midnight seven days a week) had been

miscalculated and would be unacceptable given the significant impact musical and other

events would have on the surrounding locality, which would include Wilby,

(c) insufficient information had been provided about the proposed campsite and its

management.

Defibrillator The defibrillator has now arrived in Wilby! Arrangements are in hand to obtain estimates

for its installation which will hopefully take place in January 2017. Thereafter a

Community Awareness Seminar (to be conducted by the Community Heartbeat Trust) will

be held so that as many people as possible can become familiar with the defibrillator and

how to use it. Details of the seminar will be notified by email to those on the register and

on posters to be displayed on the Parish noticeboard and elsewhere in the village. If you

wish to join the email register, which is a very useful means of receiving information

of community interest please contact Julie Collett, the Parish Clerk at

[email protected]. Residents of surrounding villages are most welcome to attend

this meeting.

Next Meeting – Todd Strehlow The next meeting of the council will be held in the Coronation Hall at 7.30 pm on

Wednesday 11 January 2017. All are very welcome to attend. We will have a full agenda

including co-option of a new member, the defibrillator, the provision of a Speed Indicator

Device, and the council’s budget for 2017/18. Importantly we will also be marking the

resignation of Todd Strehlow, who is standing down from the council having moved to

Campsea Ashe. Todd has served as a member since October 2010 and has played a key

role as the lead on planning matters, in representing the School and latterly as the Footpath

Warden. We are most grateful for his support over the years and we will miss his

measured and frequently original contributions to our deliberations. Todd has contributed

a great deal to Wilby both as a council member and as a school governor (and purveyor of

delicious apple juice) and we wish him and his family well in their new home.

Lessons and Carols for the Eve of Christmas 6.30 p.m. on Christmas Eve

St Lawrence’s Church

The Carol Service followed by fish and chips at The Crown is now firmly rooted in

the tradition of this village! With families travelling long distances to be together

at Christmas, youngsters coming home from university and friends meeting up

in celebration, coming to church and especially our church on Christmas Eve

seems to be the only way to mark the start of the festive season. St Lawrence’s

stands as an anchor point in the life of this village and at no time is this better

recognised than this most holy of nights. The Chantry Singers will be present,

however no one needs any help with singing at Brundish! To all those who have

never been, and especially those who are new to Brundish, please know how

welcome you would be on this and every occasion. If you are unused to worship,

we will help you and will look forward to doing so. Hope to see you.

Christmas Midnight Communion 11.30 p.m. Christmas Eve

St Lawrence’s Church

To mark the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, people from villages far

around unite at our sacred place of worship. Whether you have been confirmed

or not you are warmly invited to join us.

Brundish Film – Thursday 9th February 2017

There will be no film in January 2017 and our first film of the new year will be

Anthropoid to be shown on Thursday 9th February 2017.

Anthropoid is based on the extraordinary true story of Operation Anthropoid, the

WWII mission by Czech and a Slovak patriots (exiled in the UK) to assassinate

SS General Reinhard Heydrich. In addition to his responsibility for numerous

atrocities in Czechoslovakia, including Lidice, Heydrich had chaired the

Wannsee conference that formalised the Nazi plan to exterminate the Jews. He

was the third in line in the Nazi hierarchy after Hitler and Himmler. The film

clearly depicts the dilemma of those involved in balancing the assassination

of Heydrich with the inevitable reprisals that would follow. Starring Jamie

Dornan, Cillian Murphy and Charlotte Le Bon, this thought provoking and tense

and gripping film is Certificate 15 with inevitably many scenes of violence.

Doors open in Brundish Village Hall at 7 for 7.30 pm on 9th February, entrance

payable at the door (£5 for adults and £4.50 for Under 18s).
