Last week’s severe weather event was another prime example of the resilience and dependability of our students, staff and families. As we returned to school after the long weekend, heavy rains, winds and the odd tornado swept through the metro area just as folks were heading out to school and work. We did not have enough time to call off school as most of you were on your way…a few of our staff were already on campus during the worst of it. We had little choice but to “carry on”. There was also no way to predict that the electricity would be out on the south end of campus. Admin team and classes were without electricity for their computers, lights and, worst of all, coffee! Although the classrooms have windows, the sky was still very bleak and there was not enough light to read in many of the rooms. Always prepared, our staff and students turned on their phone flashlights, clustered close to the windows for the increased light and did school the “old fashioned” way. When I toured a visiting family, they were very impressed with how calm and productive the classes were, in spite of the challenges. Why is this such a big deal? Perhaps for some of you, it isn’t. Perhaps your teen has always been able to adjust when situations are not as expected and can tolerate discomfort and inconvenience without losing their focus. Congrats to you. The rest of us have experienced a very different scenario through the years. Teens with learning disabilities often look for any reason to miss school. Once in class, they expect the routine to remain constant and rely on the predictability of the teacher and the environment. In addition, being cold, wet and unable to see your materials could be a perfect catalyst for complaints and distraction. It is not that our kids are difficult or irresponsible. They simply have had to work so hard to keep up and maintain that the slightest glitch can throw them for a loop. When stressed, their tolerance for discomfort or the unfamiliar is greatly reduced. Unless they feel confident and safe…that’s the key. Last Tuesday the students were able to continue with their lessons, attend to their teachers and maintain a steady, calm demeanor because they knew everything was going to be ok. They knew they could handle the unusual circumstances and had a job to do. Our students believe that what they do in class is important and that they are capable of making the adjustment needed to get the job done. I would say that is an awesome indicator of a mature and responsible student! We are really appreciative of the Campus Appreciation Day this past Saturday and the First Annual Cougar Classic Car Show and Bazaar this Saturday. Christy Hood-Cree, Mollie Staid and their expanded team of sponsors and volunteers have an ambitious plan for our campus and will hold a work day again on November 8th. While we enjoy our naturalized setting, this tender love and care to our plants and landscaping is appreciated more than we can express. The Car Show and Bazaar event is on a roll! Folks are coming from near and far to show their cars and purchase our wares…the energy and enthusiasm is palpable! Moby (in the Morning DJ) will add his own special touch to the festivities. Don’t miss a single minute!

PAC PICKS THIS WEEK
Thanks to all the volunteers – Steve and Sandy Blagg,
Jennifer Clair, Laura Finnell, Cameron Hood-Cree,
Jeff McDuffie, Jim Mengason, Mike and Amelia
Staid, Ian Walters and Claire
Wylie - who took time from their
busy schedules on Saturday to
help clean up and beautify the TCS campus. Keep
your eyes open for continued work throughout the
week. And a special thank
you to Christy Hood-Cree
and Mollie Staid for all their
work to organize and coordinate the campus
beautification efforts. Our parents and students
are amazing!
TCS appreciates support from our local vendors. We want to
thank Autumn Hill Nurseries for their generous pricing on
the plants used for the campus beautification project. We
also want to mention the opening of Peach and The
Porkchop located in Roswell. They donated a variety of
plants and ground cover last spring. TCS
appreciates support from the community and we
hope you will visit these businesses and thank
them for what they have done for our school.
PAC SOCIAL EVENTS
Would you like to meet other TCS parents in your area?
Get to know other parents from the school? A great way
to do this is to attend a Parent Social! The dates are
November 6, February 5 and April 23. The November 6
event will be in Sandy Springs from 6-7:30pm. Even if
you don’t live in this area, consider coming by on your
way home from work. Enjoy some appetizers and a glass of wine in a relaxed
atmosphere. This is a great way to meet other parents and staff. RSVP to
stephaniej@cottageschool.org today.
Now you know about our Parent Socials, how about Student Socials? This is a
new idea but we thought it would be a good way for parents and students to
make new friends and catch up with old ones. We hope you will consider
meeting up with TCS folks at 10am on Monday, November 3 at Top Golf in
Alpharetta. Enjoy a day off from school in a fun setting with
other TCS folks. RSVP to beckythelen@hotmail.com or
brendahall1@msn.com by October 29 so we can get an idea on
numbers. (This is not a drop off event; it is for both parent and
student!)
Don’t forget the general PAC meeting on Friday, November 7 at 8am
in the Media Center. Come hear what is going on at TCS and how you
can be involved!

TAE KWON DO
Coming to the Cottage School!
The Cottage School is proud to offer Tae Kwon Do (Korean Martial Arts) to its students beginning on Monday,
November 10, 2014. The instructor is Master Pius, an award-winning and internationally recognized Tae Kwon Do
Champion, Master Instructor, and seventh degree Black Belt.
While developing their martial arts skills, students will also enhance their concentration, self-esteem, strength, flexibility,
coordination, and general physical fitness level. Weekly training will be interspersed with a variety of activities to
provide a schedule that is both fun and action-packed. This international Olympic sport focuses on control, balance,
discipline, and empowering nature over mind and body. Students practice the forms and movements required as they earn
their belts, progressing in sophistication and mastery as they advance. We must have a minimum of ten students before
we can offer this opportunity. Questions? Contact Nancy at 678-250-5111 or by email NancyW@cottageschool.org.
