Integer Operations, A Review

Addition AlgorithmTo add two integers with the same sign (two negatives OR two positives), Add the Absolute Values. The sign will be the same as the two numbers you are adding.

To add two integers with different signs (a positive and a negative), find the difference (subtract) between the two Absolute Values. The sign is the same as the sign of the number with the greatest absolute value.

Subtraction Algorithm To subtract two integers, change the subtraction sentence to an addition sentence AND change the 2nd integer to its opposite. Then follow rules for adding integers.

Addition and Subtraction are Inverse Operations. Subtracting a number is the same as Adding it’s Opposite.

Multiplication and Division AlgorithmsMultiply or divide the absolute values normally. The sign rules are as follows:

If the signs of the two numbers are the same, the answer is positive.

If the signs of the two numbers are different, the answer is negative.

Multiplication and Division are Inverse Operations. Dividing a number is the same as Multiplying by it’s Reciprocal.
