TRENCH WARFARE
“Whilst asleep during the night, we were frequently awakened by rats running over us. When this happened too often for my liking, I would lie on my back and wait for a rat to linger on my legs; then violently heave my legs upwards, throwing the rat into the air. Occasionally, I would hear a grunt when the rat landed on a fellow victim.”
(R L Venables)
WILSON DECLARES AMERICAN NEUTRALITY
Why did the US Refuse to get involved in the beginning?
Territory not directly affected
U.S. had cultural and economic ties with both sides divided loyalties
Pacifists: against all war
Wilson wins re-election in 1916 with slogan “He kept us out of War!”
The effect of the war upon the United States will depend upon what American citizens say and
do. Every man who really loves America will act and speak in the true spirit of neutrality, which
is the spirit of impartiality and fairness and friendliness . . .
The people of the United States are drawn from many nations, and chiefly from the nations now
at war. It is natural and inevitable that there should be the utmost variety of sympathy and desire
among them with regard to the issues and circumstances of the conflict. Some will wish one
nation, others another, to succeed in the momentous struggle.
Such divisions amongst us would be fatal to our peace of mind and might seriously stand in the
way of the proper performance of our duty as the one great nation at peace . . .
REASONS THE US ENTERS THE WAR1. Zimmerman Note

U-boats to sink any ship in Allied territory without warning
• May 1915: British passenger ship, Lusitania, is sunk, 128 Americans killed
“There is such a think as a nation being so right that it does not need to convince others by force that it is right” – Wilson in reaction to Lusitania
APRIL 6, 1917: US DECLARES WAR
“The world must be made safe for democracy. Its peace must be planted upon the tested foundations of political liberty . . . We are but one of the champions of the rights of mankind. We shall be satisfied when those rights have been made as secure as the faith and the freedom of nations can make them.”
-Woodrow Wilson
