Dear Reader
Greetings! It is a pleasure to present the April – June 2019 newsletter of the IRMRA. As youwill note from its contents, training continues to be an important part of the organisation. Itis only through training workshops that the necessary skill-sets of those working in therubber industry in various capacities can be strengthened. This is essential in view of thequick pace at which technology in the rubber and allied sectors has been evolving. Globally, manufacturers of rubber products are making a huge transition to such benchmarking levelsas Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT). It is not long before Indian producers ofrubber and rubber goods migrate to such platforms. With the increasing focus onsustainability, circular economy has become a buzz word for our industry.IRMRA focus in improving the quality culture of MSME sectors and enhance
competitiveness of Indian Industry to face global competition. IRMRA launches “AnnualTechnical Contract Service for MSME sectors” and “Annual Corporate Technical Service”for the benefit of members and customers. Interested members and customers can contactIRMRA for more details.IRMRA has been doing pioneering work in this field and our recent workshops on physicaland chemical testing of rubber products as well as laboratory management systems, amongothers, is evidence of this march towards the next generation of production andmanagement.Meanwhile, keeping the spirit of celebration high, the IRMRA commemorated the ‘NationalTechnological Day’ – an event that not only saw the enthusiastic participation of manyesteemed guests but also staff members who contributed their talent to make it a success. The team at IRMRA must be appreciated for its never-ending support for all such events. Toconclude, let us now look forward to the next quarter with the same optimism.
Best RegardsDr. K. RajkumarDirector, IRMRA

IRMRA RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
PATENTS
Patent application filed for “Coconut nut shell extract (CNSE) as a multifunctional additive in rubber
compound “ Application No.201921015284 dated 16.04.2019
Technology available for commercialization. Interested members can get in touch with IRMRA.
1. “Utilization of cocopith in rubber compounds” won first prize in story of makers Techexpo 2,
Matunga, Mumbai (the names of the students are as follows:- Ms. Rashmi Jaiiswal, Ms. Pranali
Liladhar Nandkar, Ms.. Shakalo Anil Thakur & Mr. Kartik Vipin Savla)
2. “Phase changing stearate ions as active fillers in multifunctional carboxylated acrylonitrile
butadiene composite: Exploring the role of zinc stearate”
A suitable polar additive‐like zinc stearate (ZnSt) was incorporated in varied amounts to the
mixture of carboxylated acrylonitrile–butadiene rubber and zinc oxide in the pursuit to introduce
smart traits in the composites. Zinc stearate is not reported to effectively crosslink carboxylated
nitrile rubber as compared to ZnO but, by the virtue of its strong crystalline nature (solid
particles), it enhances the mechanical properties like stress–strain, tear strength, hardness, and
so forth of the rubber composites. Moreover, due to the melting nature of the ZnSt at a
relatively higher temperature, an alteration of the mechanical behavior of the composite is
observed. In addition to the mechanical adaptability, the sample is also found to offer shape
memory properties. Initially, the specimens were deformed above the melting temperature (Tm)
of ZnSt (∼121 °C) to create a temporary shape, and then they were fixed into that shape by
quenching the material to a temperature much below Tm, keeping the stress constant. The
permanent form was recovered when the specimens were reheated above Tm without applying
any stress. The efficiency of shape fixing was used as the determinant of the shape memory
behavior, and up to 90% efficiencies were achieved. accepted in JAPS.
3. “ Performance optimization of Co203-PVDF-CNT based Super capacitor electrode through multi-
response optimization method” is accepted for publication in IONICS.
Taguchi optimization technique is used for obtaining optimal chemical composition of active
materials to achieve maximum specific capacitance and minimum ESR for cobalt oxide-based
electrode for supercapacitor. The study is based on interaction effect of three control factors
which are mass loading of Co2O3, PVDF and MW-CNT, respectively. A regression model equation
is also developed and validated experimentally. Optimum level of the control factors for
maximum specific capacitance is found as Co2O3-40%, PVDF-10%, and MWCNT-30% and for
minimum ESR is found as Co2O3-40%, PVDF-20%, and MWCNT-5%, respectively. The results can
lead to new insights into development of supercapacitors with enhanced performance.
