One of the great pleasures in life has to be that of taking a wander around Piedmont’s vineyards to get to know the 16 DOCG and 42 DOC wines that make this region one giant vineyard - of over 45,000 hectares - elegantly distributed over the hills and even the Alps and Alpine foothills. Piedmont is wine country par excellence: its range of native grape varieties and the tireless work of the wine-makers yield wines of outstanding quality that are celebrated and appreciated all over the world.

The DOCG wine classificationIdentifies wines with Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin

At the very top in terms of quality, wines certified ‘Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita’ are made from grapes grown in certain ideal locations, such as Barolo, Roero, Gavi and Gattinara. Strict regulations govern each stage of production, from the yield per hectare of the grapes to the ageing process, to the alcohol content and sensory characteristics of the wine, that have to be approved by dedicated panels of experts. Piedmont currently has 16 DOCG wines.

▪ Alta Langa. This designation of origin is reserved for sparkling white and rosé wines made from Pinot Nero and Chardonnay, produced by the classic method.▪ Asti. Moscato bianco grapes

are used to make aromatic Asti spumante, known all over the world, and the sweet wine Moscato d’Asti.▪ Barbaresco. This wine is

made from the Nebbiolo grapes cultivated on the hills

DOCGwinesoverlooking the Tanaro river, around the communes of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive, and part of Alba.▪ Barbera d’Asti. Produced

in a large hilly area of the provinces of Asti and Alessandria, using Barbera grapes (minimum 90%).▪ Barbera del Monferrato

Superiore. Made in the province of Alessandria and part of that of Asti, this wine is aged for 14 months, 6 of which in wooden barrels.▪ Barolo. Made from Nebbiolo

grapes, this is Piedmont’s noblest and most prestigious wine, and its history is bound up with figures like Giulia Falletti, Marquise of Barolo, and Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour.▪ Brachetto d’Acqui or Acqui.

Made exclusively from aromatic Brachetto grapes, in the varieties spumante and “tappo raso”, this is a particularly enjoyable sweet wine.▪ Dolcetto di Diano d’Alba

or Diano d’Alba. This ruby red

“Dolcetto” is made exclusively in the hilly area of the commune of Diano d’Alba (Cuneo).▪ Dogliani. The distinctive

structure and body of this wine makes it one of the very finest of its kind in Piedmont.▪ Dolcetto di Ovada

Superiore or Ovada. Made exclusively from Dolcetto grapes in a number of communes in the Ovada area. Aged for at least 12 months.

▪ Erbaluce di Caluso or Caluso. Made with Erbaluce grapes cultivated in a small wine-growing area in the province of Turin around the central hub of Caluso. Spumante and passito varieties are also produced.▪ Gattinara. This historic

Piedmontese wine is produced in the commune of the same name in the province of Vercelli.

Made from Nebbiolo grapes (at least 90%), with the addition of Vespolina and/or Bonarda di Gattinara.▪ Gavi or Cortese di Gavi. This

white wine is made in a small hilly area in the province of Alessandria, exclusively from Cortese grapes.▪ Ghemme. Made from the

grape varieties Nebbiolo (at least 85%), Vespolina and Bonarda Novarese, this wine is made in the commune of the same name, and that of Romagnano Sesia.

▪ Roero. Made in the area of the same name in the province of Cuneo, on the sunny hills that overlook the Tanaro river, using Nebbiolo grapes for Roero and Arneis grapes for the white wine Roero Arneis.▪ Ruchè di Castagnole

Monferrato. Made from the grape variety of the same name (at least 90%) cultivated in Castagnole Monferrato and the surrounding area, Ruchè is a rare native variety, and all that is known about its history comes from oral accounts.

Piedmont currently boasts an impressive 42 DOC wines. Although this category is less exacting than DOCG, ‘Denominazione di Origine Controllata’ status guarantees consumers that a given wine is produced in a certain area, possesses certain sensory characteristics and is made using a given method, yield per hectare, ageing period and other parameters specified in the production regulations.

Being a direct expression of the land where it is made and the human toil that went into producing it, wine is always bound up with culture, history and traditions. This deep-seated bond between man and the land means that even in a range of a few hundred metres, the same grape variety can produce wines with vastly different sensory characteristics. The numerous Regional Wine Centres located throughout Piedmont, from Langhe to Roero, from the vast, varied area of Monferrato to the hills and Alpine foothills around Turin and in Northern Piedmont, safeguard and promote wine and the agricultural landscape. Often hosted in prestigious castles, the Regional Wine Centres, which attract millions of tourists, stand guard over Piedmont’s wine country and help promote the culture, folk traditions, gastronomy and genuine beauty of the region’s wine-making areas.
