MASTER OF THE IMPRESSIONISM.

•Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch painter.

•He was born on March 30th, 1853, in the Netherlands.

•He had red hair and a brother named Theo.

• When he was 15 years old he left the school and started to work in an ART GALLERY.

• In 1869, the Art Gallery sent him to work in England.

• He learnt a lot about painting. But he wasn’t happy so…

He return to the Netherlands,

and worked as a teacher. But he

wasn’t happy so…

He wanted to become a PRIEST.

But he wasn’t happy so…

He decided to paint by himself and he went to Paris.

• HE BECAME AN ARTIST.

In Paris he met Paul Gaugin who introduced him to the IMPRESSIONISM.

• Vincent van Gogh loved IMPRESSIONISM.

IMPRESSIONISM is the use of COLOURS. Colours show emotions.

• But Vincent van Gogh makes also use of the brushstroke to show movement.

• Thick, short brushstroke.The Starry Night (1889)

• Although he was great, people did not understand him. He painted 900 pictures more or less but he only sold ONE to his brother Theo.

He was sad. • He went to Arles,

another town in the south of France.

He painted his room.

One night, he cut off his ear.

• He was sent to an ASYLUM a place for mental illness. • Theo, his brother, moved him to another asylum in

Auvers near Paris. Theo looked after his brother Vincent.

Vincent was happy and painted a lot.

• Portrait of his doctor. Sunflowers.

But in 1890 he committed suicide. He was only 37 years old.

After his death, he became popular and famous.
