TARGETPOPULATIONPregnantWomen,Mothers,Infants(Birthto12Months)

APPROACH:Homevisitorservicesareintendedtoeducateandpositivelyimpactbehaviorsbyincreasingthenumberofwomenaccessingearlyandcomprehensiveservicesbefore,during,andafterpregnancy.Ahomevisitorprovidesinformationonhealthandsafety,parenting,preventiveprograms,andinfantdevelopment.Acriticalresponsibilityofthehomevisitoristohaveabroadknowledgeofavailablecommunityresources.

Homevisitingincludesprenatalandpostpartumvisits.Onaverage,visitstakeaboutanhour.Typically,1-2visitsareconducted;however,thenumberofvisitsisadecisionofthesupervisingstaffandhomevisitorbasedonfamilyneed/levelofriskandavailabilityofreferralservices.Thehomevisitingprogramisintendedtoserveasabridgetoconnectfamiliestoneededservices.

UniversalHomeVisitingisaproductoftheKansasMaternalandChildHealthprogram(MCH),KansasDepartmentofHealthandEnvironment(KDHE).

MINDSET AND MODELING THE WAY

AUniversalHomeVisitorhastherightmindsettomodelthewayforfamilies.

TheUniversalHomeVisitingprogramusesastrength-basedapproachandconcentratesontheinherentstrengthsofindividuals,families,groups,andorganizations.Thisapproachdeployspersonalstrengthstoaidinrecoveryandempowerment.Tofocusonhealthandwell-beingistoembraceanasset-basedapproachwherethegoalistopromotethepositive.

MINDSET:TheUniversalHomeVisitormustpresentinformationinawaythatisnottooclinical.Theyshouldstresstheimportanceofpartnerengagement,asappropriate.Theyshouldbeculturallyawareandeasilyabletointeractwithpeoplefromvaryingsocio-economicbackgrounds.Theyshouldberespectfuloffamilies,haveagrowthmindsetaroundanindividual’sabilitytoimprove,andshouldmeetfamilieswheretheyare—aslongasthere’snointerferencewiththesafetyofthefamilyorhomevisitor.

MODELING:Homevisitorsshouldmodelgoalsetting.Becausehomevisitorsmeetclientswheretheyare,thisoftenmeanssettingshort-term,achievablegoals—startingwithnextweek,notnextmonthornextyear.Homevisitorsshoulddemonstratepositiveparent/childinteraction:pickthebabyup,talktohimorher,showthefamilyhowtointeractwithaninfant.Homevisitorsteachthefamilytoworkthroughproblemsbyhelpingthemidentifysolutions.Homevisitorfollowupiskeytomakingsurereferralsarekeptandgoalsaremet.

AUniversalHomeVisitormustmeetminimumqualificationsandwillcompleteinitialandfollow-uptrainingrequirements.

• MinimumofahighschooldiplomaorGED• Abilitytodifferentiatebetweenhomevisitorandnursingresponsibilities• Respectfulnessoftheconfidentialityofaclientrelationship• Effectivecommunicationskills• Abilitytopresentawarm,concerned,culturally-sensitiveattitudetowardfamilies• Knowledgeofavailablecommunityresourcesandhowtoutilizethem• Takesdirectionandcarriesoutdecisionsmadebyasupervisor• Completestimelyandaccuratereports• Worksindependentlyanddependably• Modelsahealthylifestylewhileinteractingwithclients

HOMEVISITORORIENTATIONREQUIREMENTS

Orientationofeachhomevisitormustbecompletedwithin90daysofhire/grantaward.Anorientation“checklist”isavailableintheKansasMaternalandChildHealthServicemanualandshouldbeusedtodocumentcompletionoforientationrequirements.Completedchecklistsmustbepresenteduponrequestduringmonitoringvisits.

PriortoProvidingServices,thehomevisitorwill:• Reviewtheagency’sAidtoLocalMCHapplicationtobetterunderstandtheservices,

partnerships,andhomevisitingplansubmittedtoKDHE• Reviewagencypoliciesandproceduresregardinghomevisiting• CompleteBasicKansasHomeVisitingTraining• Becomefamiliarwithresourcematerialssharedduringvisits• Becomefamiliarwithcommunitypartners,services,andresources• Shadow3visitsconductedbyanexperiencedhomevisitor• Conductatleast1visitaccompaniedbytheHomeVisitingProgramSupervisor

Part1:Onlinetrainingsmustbecompletedwithin30daysofhireandpriortoprovidingservices.Itisrequiredofallhomevisitorsandsupervisors,regardlessofprofession/credentialbecausecontentisspecifictohomevisitingservices.

Annual/OngoingTraining:AllhomevisitorsarerequiredtoattendthefallregionaltrainingprovidedbyKDHE.Supervisorsarestronglyencouragedtoattendinordertoprovideadequatesupportandsupervision.

Recommended/Optional:QualityconferencesandeventssuchastheGovernor’sPublicHealthConference,Governor’sConferenceforPreventionofChildAbuseandNeglect,andKansasPublicHealthAssociationConference.
