Universal Design

Paige Barlow

What is UD?

A teaching framework that is designed to reach across a variety of students by using new learning experiences so that students can learn, know, and want to do a lot more in school.

How Universal Design is different

Most curricula focus on the average student

UD is the teaching process that benefits all students to the greatest extent possible

It puts emphasis on diversity and inclusiveness

Provide Multiple Means of Representation

Different options for perception

Different options for language and symbols

Different options for comprehension

Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression

Options for physical action

Options for expressive skills and fluency

Options for executive functions

Provide Multiple Means of Engagement

Options for recruiting interest

Options for sustaining effort and persistance

Options for self-regulation

What is the main point?

As teachers we need to try to reduce disabilities by changing our ways of teaching to address different kinds of student’s thinking.

We should be using creativity to reach all of our students.

UDL works for every student so they can get what they need, become excited about learing, and feel accomplished.
